So 3CK's thread got me thinking...how many of y'all discriminate while hunting? Drakes only or certain species or whatever. I know a guy that won't shoot anything other than a pintail, teal, or a mallard... Only time I hunted with him a whole flock of gaddys dumped right in and he never even batted an eye em and then got pissed off when I shot two.. Me personally idgaf. It looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and flys like a duck its gonna die like one. Even Spoonies I'll fuck their shit up any day. They all taste the same in sausage. |

Depends on what the ducks are doing. If mallards are working a hole and I'm pretty confident I can limit on them I'll pass on the rest. I generally pass on early teal as well unless it's really bad slow. |

I am a duck hunter so I am shooting. Of course, we don't get the species that some places get so it is a lot easier decision. oh, and I am never passing up shooting teal! Love to eat them and love to shoot them. |

For me it depends on who I'm hunting with and what's flying. If "good" birds are moving and working I enjoy the hunt for them (working them and or adjusting for them). It's more meaning full to shoot 3 or 4 mallards, pintail or wigeon then 6 ring necks, spoonies, etc. But don't get me wrong if it's slow or no good birds them I'm not picky. I also love going on the ring neck hunts in bayou black and the coot shoots in lake boeuf. This is a video is from a couple yrs ago of my best pm hunt. If I wanted to just kill I would have been out of there in 10 minutes with redheads and teal. but because I took the time to hunt and work I ended up with a teal, a redhead, 2 pintails, and a pair of mallards (and should have passed on the 1st 2). The suzie even landed 15 yds from me while the green head landed 100 yds. both her and I called until he picked up and came over the edge of my decoys then I busted both their asses. Depends on the hunt for me. For ducks.... If I'm in nodak/canada I take my time and get real selective to make the hunt last. Not wanting to bang out a quick limit and go lay around in a motel room. At home If it is a quickie hunt I go for it. For geese I like to band hunt. |

I just don't see a point in being picky. Unless maybe you live off eating ducks but then again you won't get very far like that being picky... I very rarely will grill up some ducks unless its teal or woodies. Rest of it gets ground up to either sausage or jalepenio cheese slim jims. Or jerky. It all taste the same that way and a limit is a limit in my book. |

Being selective about the meat plays a little role but it's the "trophy" birds I'm after. Having the patience and putting forth the effort to shoot a couple of green heads over 6 ring necks is more rewarding to me. But there is a time and a place for that not all hunts are like that and if I hunt with someone else obviously they will dictate how to handle the hunt. Like a deer hunter, sure there are just meat hunters out there just wanting to fill their freezer. I'd guess most deer hunters are more trophy hunters trying to get that big buck and passing on does and young bucks. To me it's the same passing on the decoying red head or gadwall for a chance to shoot the working green head. You may even get a chance to shoot a double of two species. |

Hey red heads don't taste all the bad I shot my fair share last year lol. Yeah if there's puddle ducks working while divers are in the decoy's I'll pass and wait but if a group of spoonies pile in and another bird isn't in sight I'll tear em up lol. I would shit a brick if I killed a greenhead here..its mainly gaddys or teal. I only kill pintail when I travel further south, but even pintail and redheads are all that I see... |

I think we're on the same point. Each area has it's typical types of birds some better then others. In a lot of cases you can only be so picky or you won't shoot anything. |

I try to shoot nothing but green because i know it helps the mallard population and mainly because greenheads outnumber hens around here and mallards are mainly what we see. We let the early flights of wood ducks go through so we dont disturb other hunters that are actually getting early mallards(generally mallards find the bigger holes first then as the sun comes up they pile in to tighter ones) but if a bunch of woodies, gadwall, teal, pintail come in with a group of green theyre bonus ducks and are fair game! Of course sometimes a hen gets taken as collateral damage in all the excitement. |

Normal hunt where I'm at the most. , woodies and teal right at day light. Then mixed bag from there . Mostly gadwall , widgeon , pintail, mallard. This last year had a few early cold fronts push allot of mallards down. We never shot full green head limits. , but got green on every hunt. Gadwall numbers are way up around here. , but I like them. . They eat real good . H Finn |

Yeah I know. They sure are good though when your sitting in the blind lol. 30lbs is a lot though when you think about it. I usually only do about 10 a year and it lasts a whole season. Yeah I know its expensive but its easier to just get someone else to do it. Sausage is easy I have a grinder but mixing slim Jim's is a pain in the ass, tried it one time and never again. Anyways, point being they all taste the same ground up |
