Post subject:  Led inverter????

I was thinking about upgrading lights for my bowfishing/flounder giggin. I would like to run atleast 30 watt leds, I know seelite has them in 12 volt , but I don't want to spend that much on a single light. I always get cheaper leds and take em apart and reseal anyways, and have never had a problem. My plan is to run those 30 watt A/C off of a inverter. So it'll be DC from the battery and AC coming out. My battery is hooked up to the alternator and I have nothing else pulling amps off the battery. I was planning on running 5 of them so about 13 amps. I just don't want more than the two I have in it now. My question is could a inverter or multiple handle the 150 watts I want, any input would be appreciated.

If 150 watts is all you'll be using then yes, that's nothing for a 1500-2000 watt inverter generator. The 30 watt led's are 110volt, right? If so, that's only 1.36 amps. You could run (50) - 30 watt AC leds on a 2000 Inverter and still work hahaha

I think he's talking about running a dc to ac converter off the battery so he can run ac lights off a dc battery, and if that's what he's talking about, that's a really dumb idea.

Oh shit, I see that now... I dont know if that'll work or not. I got carried away. haha

edit... I dont see why it wouldn't work. He's only talking 150 watts.

It would work, but it's an awfully inefficient way to do things. Just run dc lights directly off the battery. If you're lucky, that inverter converts to ac at 50% efficiency, so half (possibly worse, not likely much better) your dc current is just completely wasted. Just run straight dc on the lights, hardly any waste in any quality led setup.

It was the only way I knew to convert Dc to Ac. I know how to drive those 30 watts with a 12 volt to 30 volt step up but its a pain in the butt because each light would need its own step up. I was trying to avoid a generator because I don't know to safely wire a generator in a aluminum boat.

Buy 12v led's... If you aren't running a genny, don't fool with 110.

Thanks will, Ill just give those 27 watts another shot , maybe this outcome will be different .

Shop around if you don't like those particular lights for some reason, but the inverter thing is a bad idea, IMO.

Yeah, I was just shooting you something showing they can be had for cheap.

Thanks for yalls help, maybe my previous experience with those 27 watts was just bad. I'll definitely give them a shot especially since they aren't that expensive.

I want to thank yall again for yall suggestions. I actually found some 10 watt flood lights , that in my opinion produce better light. I bought one just to see and the light intensity isn't that of a 27 watt but because its a single chip flood light the coverage is amazing. I ordered 8 of them. That will cover my 1754 good. That is still only 80 watts :D :D :D . I have two 100 amp hr batteries. The run time on these lights should be 14hrs plug according to ohm law , but I know batteries don't follow his rule but it should be atleast 8 hrs. 8-) 8-) 8-) .

I would suggest using 30-50w, 12v lights. 10w lights will not give you a wide enough halo, and will not penetrate stained water. If you need more run time, add that inverter you were talking about, and use a genny to charge the batteries while you are fishing. Do not run a regular charger from straight to the genny. You will burn your troller up.

Do not run an inverter. That is a stupid idea. HORRIBLE advice for reasons already explained.

If you are going to run a genny and want to run 110v lights, there's no need to run an inverter hooked to batteries. You'd just run power straight from the genny to the lights.

I like the single chip lights better than the array's like the popular 27 watters, but not familiar with the 10w ones so cant comment there.

If you want something you can run indefinitely, without having to worry about batteries (just a small amount of gas), you should look into one of the inverter-generators (a generator, not a dc to ac converter that looks like a car amplifier). You can get a small suitcase generator that is almost whisper quiet. You can run a converter to keep batteries full if you run 12v lights, or you can just run 110v lights. If you don't run a trolling motor, 110v lights would make the most sense if you're gonna run a genny. If you do run a tm, i'd run a genny/converter setup and run either 12 or 24v lights depending on what troller. Never have to worry about killing a battery..
