So, when planning for a duck season, how far in advance do you scout? What exactly are you looking for and what are ways to attract ducks that are legal. Not counting decoys/calls.

I have a few pieces of land that is mostly swamp and hasn't been hunted in years. Land owner said years ago there were, mallards and french ducks in the morning, and they'd limit out on woodies in the evening.

Just wondering what to look for, besides the ducks themselves.

I'm scouting year round. Best thing to look for is birds, or any type of food ducks eat. Ducks will be in certain places consistantly for a reason. If you can plant something and then flood it then you may be in business. Otherwise I don't know of anything that can be planted in water.

Actually --- right now is a great time to scout for next year's
duck season.... The late migraters are "imprinting" upon areas
right now that they are very likely to return to next year....

Also spring is a good time to return to those areas - to plant
something to sweeten to pot for next years crop....

Breed boxes for local ducks --- like woodies will also sweeten the pot...
I try to put out about 6 boxes each year....

Thanks for the "serious" advice and for some laughs. :D

No I'm not f'n with you. I've been out of duck hunting for about 20 years. And even when I did hunt ducks back then, I was 13y/o, so I really never had to do any scouting. I always went with uncles and relatives to areas that they knew and hunted for a while.
This next upcoming season, I have the oppertunity to hunt private wooded swamp land. I haven't been on the property yet to see what is there. So I was just looking to see what some of you, if you hunt ducks, would do if you were going to hunt new areas that are unfamiliar. Hunting in lakes and marsh ponds, where everyone else goes, is easy and I really wasn't looking for advice for that type of situation.

if you can i would get out there as soon as you could just to see if there are any birds using the area.
