 Re: German shorthair pointer question?
they make great duck dogs, i have one. They caint take the cold like some other dogs can. I would look at a VDD, they make great all around dogs, and can take the bitter cold. There is a guy on here that has one maybe he'll post up

My buddy has one. We hunted with her this year when Sadie was down. Good dog but she gets cold easily & will shiver and whine.

 Re: German shorthair pointer question?
my brother-in-law has one and it aint worth a crap as a duck dog because once his balls get wet you can't get him back in the water. however the dog is great at blood trailing deer

If you want a good all-around gun dog, just go get yourself a well bred black lab and be done with it.

 Re: German shorthair pointer question?
I have an uncle who is an avid duck hunter and has had German Shorthaired pointers all his life. They make excellent duck dogs. They point, flush, retreive.....you name it.

 Re: German shorthair pointer question?
I have a buddy that has one great dog all around duck/dove/quail. He has another that will retrieve a tennis ball all day, but wont touch a dead bird and when he fires a gun she heads for the house. So i guess it depends on the dog.

 Re: German shorthair pointer question?
The short hair will work but will suffer with the cold. The DD (wirehare has a much better coat for the work.I have trained labs and English pointers, the dd is my dog of choice. They are great duck dogs and hard to beat on pheasant. They don't do as well in the heat as a pointer. Mine hunt and point quail/woodcock and pheasant: Retrieve doves and ducks, have blood tracked deer and run rabbits and deer. The dd is not the same as a akc wirehair, The akc wire hair came from the dd, but the akc does not require testing for approved breeding. You can get good wirehairs but they are harder to find than good dd. Go to www.vdd-gna.org. If all I wanted was a duck dog I would go with a chessie, upland birds a good English pointer who will work close enough for a walking hunter. There are not enough ducks or quail anymore so I want a dog who can do it all. My youngest dog just fathered his first litter ,its a quality breeding -pups will be $500 ( I think they are too cheep) The bitch live is Tallahassee Fla, I am going to bring some pups back to New Orleans if you are close by. PM me if interested. JD

 Re: German shorthair pointer question?
I have had labs all my life. My next dog will be a Vizsla. Very similar to a shorthair.
