First Feathers for my 6mo Old
Took my 6mo old pup teal hunting this weekend. I was so impressed! It really her first time dealing with real ducks in a hunting situation. She was well behaved and did great. First birds we shot she went out and checked them out but didnt know what to do. Then we shot one that swam about 200 yards to the other side of the pond. She tracked it the whole way there. Didn't come back with it, but thats ok, i was impressed with her seeing as it was her 2nd chance. After picking up a couple birds with me walking her out there, I threw some as practice while it was slow. Thats all it took! We didn't shoot anymore after that so she didnt have a chance to pick anything up until the dove hunt that afternoon. I shot one that went down in heavy brush. I thought it was lost until Jazz came out with that dove in her mouth. I was amazed. First thing the next morn we dropped a double. She went right out and picked up the first one, then I turned her around and she went right for the 2nd. 6mo old and my pup picked up a double! We didnt shoot many birds, but seeing my dog work made it one of my most enjoyable trips ever.

Re: First Feathers for my 6mo Old
i took my 8 month old black lab out the last weekend for teal. she saw the teal fall, i walked her out and the only problem i have with her is not wanting to touch a bird. she will retrieve the dummy all day long, but will not touch a bird in the field or at home. she sniffs it out and leaves it there. i dont know what the problem is so i called old cypress kennels in kaplan and i will have him fix this problem for me i cannot get her to break that habbit.........................i know she is young but i want her ready for big duck season and he assures me he can!
