 Re: new dog
I know a guy who has the best dogs I've ever hunted with. Big money on pedigrees and training, worked year round at field trials and what not. He told me the best duck dog he ever had was a lab/pit mix. Obviously it wasn't a high dollar championship field trial dog or anything, but he said that thing would flat out find the ducks.
To answer your question, you won't really know until you start working with em. Hell, some full blooded labs don't have the drive needed to be a good duck dog. Just have to kinda wait it out, but just cause he's a mut, doesn't mean he can't be a good bird dog.
