Post New Dog
I have a 10 week old black lab puppy I want to train to hunt. Anyone have any good websites/advice? I'm seeing lots of contradictory info on line about when to start, what to start with, etc. Right now, I'm just taking him to an open field and practicing retrieves every afternoon.

This may get bashed because of his ties to mudbuddy but Freddy King has a pretty good info. He does live video of training just about every day. Lot of videos already plus you can follow a dog (Teets Life) all the way. There’s a Facebook page for members only. Chris Akin does live videos pretty regular. He gives away some pretty good prizes plus there are two seminars coming up in the next few weeks just for members. One in Sercey AR and the other at Chris Aiken’s place in Bono AR. All this and more included for just $60 a year. ( I kinda sound like a salesman) If your going to train yourself this is a good place. I’m training my first lab from this. Freddy has is also very active on the site. He answers a lot of questions. The official name is The Retriever Trainer.

I wouldn’t stress to much right now. At this point it’s just a game. Cheap training sessions fun and short. Right now you are just trying to develop the love and bond with the pup. You want him to love it and boost his confidence as much as you can. You can introduce basic commands but before you get super serious let him get about 6 months old and have his mature teeth. That’s when you can begin with force fetch. Just have fun with it. If this is your first it will be an amazing ride to watch the bond and trust grow and then to see the finished gun dog is awesome.

I will add keep sessions short and fun. You can work on basic commands and such but a pup doesn’t really get it until they are mature enough. Force fetching can start once the mature teeth come in. Mainly let them play and work on basic obedience. The obedience foundation will pay for itself when the real work beings.

Freddy king’s “program” leaves much to be desired, and on top of that I was told by a local pro that he saw Freddy do some questionable things to a young dog at a test one time so I refuse to support him.

Rick stawski has arguably the most comprehensive program available to take a well bred dog to a high level. Mike Larry is in many circles the king, but his program has been known to be a little much for a dog that’s not in the top caliber.

Aiken’s program is decent, but he does skip some steps around FF and transition. I have seen his 3rd video but I doubt it would cover the post transition phase as well as stawski’s program. Aiken is a world class pro, I just didn’t like his videos as much.

For puppies, Jackie mertens sound beginnings is usually the go to.

There are “British” methods available (I.e. Milner) but I’m not a fan.

Invest and do it right, don’t skimp out on $80 worth of DVDs and settle with mediocrity for the next 10 years.

Tom dolkens book is very good. I used it on my pup and trained her myself, and she isn’t perfect, but she goes get my ducks for me and is a joy to have hunting with me. Good luck buddy

So a another pro dog trainer said he didn’t like what Freddy was doing to a dog. In other words he was mad that Freddy gives basically free dog training lessons and has brought together a community of other dog trainers. Many of which could could be considered pros themselves help you along the way if you have any trouble. Sounds to me like that pro was a bit jealous that Freddy has hundreds of replete members.
As for Chris Akin his list of titles speak for them selves.

But to each their on. You just get a lot for $60. I’m not fussing at you but I have learned not to believe a lot of stuff that I didn’t see my self. Kinda like some of the speeds that are posted on here.

No, incorrect. I’m not going to say much else about what I heard, but it had nothing to do with business, but I did hear it from a few people, not just one, and that was with training groups from us the east coast down to Florida. Doubt there wasn’t some truth to something spread that far.

I mentioned that Aiken has titles, but that doesn’t mean his program is great. He, Lardy, Stawski, etc all took the same general program from Rex Carr, added their own slight flavor, and made a video. All are nearly repeat examples of what was later codified in the “Lardy Flow Chart”. Then Evan Graham came out with his corny 90s knock offs and made a decent program even though he doesn’t know much about dog training, and only about marketing (same approach as Freddy king....)

I have all of their programs and DVDs (with the exception of the 3rd of Aiken’s because it wasn’t worth buying after the holes in the first 2).

Here’s the thing, you’re new and barely have anecdotal evidence to back the strategy you took. That’s fine and I hope it works, but it seems that what you’re doing is wanting to be proven right so that you feel better in the path you chose and also bring someone else along that path without having finished it yourself.

I’ve seen all those videos and programs and have actually watched every single one of Freddy’s videos he also has on YouTube. I’ve also spent time with plenty of pros and serious amateurs in the AKC and HRC world. I’ve literally never come across anyone who thought anything decent of Freddy king or the stuff he peddles. The overwhelming majority will tell you the best programs are exactly what I mentioned, and had you watched them, or studied a typical development program, would have come to the same conclusion. I have been down this path, and have trained some very fine dogs to very high levels. I know what a complete program looks like, and for $20 difference in price, you chose wrong. Good thing is, it’s not the most expensive mistake you’ll make with your first dog, and wait till you need 2 dozen white bumpers to just run T pattern, then you look at wingers, etc later and you’ll see $20 on a DVD set seems minor in the grand scheme.

I hope it works out well for you, but I refuse to suggest Freddy king is of value. I’ve seen no evidence to ever suggest for the same price you couldn’t get far better.

Also, as mentioned, I like Aiken, I watched him run boomer in the SRS, I just don’t think his program is that good. It’s that simple. Would I train with him or listen to his advice, sure. Are his DVDs the best, no.

I’m currently looking for my DVD copies of stawskis program for another MMT member. If I find them after a few years of moves, I’ll gladly offer for you to borrow them to compare and maybe learn something from.

Man I didn’t mean to ruffle any feathers.

Yes this is my first dog but I am not ignorant of the situation. I watched some Larry, sound beginnings etc. I found it was easier to follow Freddy especially when I didn’t understand something I could get a hold of him and work through the issue.

I don’t really like the dvds because I don’t think it tells in detail enough info for a beginner. If you’ve trained several dogs it might make more sense.

If my dog gets off her first heat cycle I will be at Freddy’s free training day. I will get an up close look at what you talking about. I know it’s not the same as a hunt test but should be able to see how he treats a dog.

If there is any dog abuse going on I won’t support that either. I have seen some people beat their dog if they move while trying to teach honor.

As for buying training equipment. I have plenty. Several wingers, electronics and more bumpers than I actually need.

As I said I am a beginner and am not so proud that I do not listen to someone that may know a little about this topic than I do. You sound like you know quite a bit about all this. Im sure i could pick up some tips from you to.
I have just found what works best for me. Dog is progressing great and doing what I want her to. I had planned on starting FF but she went into heat. I don’t know if that would effect anything but I am going to wait.

I’ll cut you a deal, you get a copy of Stawski’s DVDs, and I’ll pm you my phone number and you can call or text me to get any clarity that can’t be answered in Stawski’s DVDs. All I ask in return is that you repent from your ways and break up with Freddy. Not being a jerk either, I like talking dog training and I really think Stawski’s DVDs paired with advice I can give is better than what you’ll get from freddy king.

As for FF, seriously, wait. Give me a call and let’s talk before you touch that dogs ear. Videos and definitely Freddy king with a dog on a picnic table holding a piece of fire wood won’t help you out....

I'd listen to the advice, I am. I have hunted with his dog many times, great dog, you'll forget he's there until needed.

That being said I am following mertins sound beginnings and then stawski. With some guidance from bluesky I have a 13 week old pup, doing pretty good. She's a high drive so extra work there but her retrieving is damn good for her age.

Take the advice, I have also watched freddy and get why some people might want to follow that. But ask yourself this do you want to gamble on how well your hunting partner turns out? I don't especially with the cost of a good bloodline.

Sorry your small mind thinks that way but I can assure you nothing could be further from the truth. I know the fellas that have put this together, have used it myself and have many friends that have used it with wild success. I can assure you none of them drive a Subaru nor do I. You will not find another group more dedicated to dogs, dog training and customer service than these guys.

Btw I know of a labradoodle that had a threesome with ur mom and an shitzu that could run circles around ur dog blue sky.

Crane I assume you prefer a block head then. I have watched some of their content, seems like they are decent guys, but at the end of the day I need a solid program to build on. So should I argue with you about American vrs British hmmm I think I'll just sit back.

Ps you have no idea what bluesky's dog is capable of, but then again I don't make allegations about things I don't see. Therefore your dog could be a future MH or a piece of shit, but without seeing I will not make assumptions.

That’s exactly what happened. At least at the end of the day I can handle a funny joke and not take it as a personal attack unlike some on here.

If you would like to debate the merits of various training programs, I’d be more than happy to. Plenty to discuss and knowledge to be shared. I made no comment to the substance of that program, because I haven’t ever rented a Subaru to drive out and observe it, but if you would like to enlighten us with what differentiates this from anything else available, I’m all ears to listen to it’s merits.

Until then, I’m going to hop back into my pinto and cruise for ladies.

Might want to take this to rep the sponsors though at yalls next tag up. They have a bigger one too that may be closer to your needs.

A Subaru has a bad ass AWD system X mode. I drive a 2018 Forester as a company vehicle and have driven around all kinds of trucks on construction sites so fuck ignorance. LOL

Another example of a village idiot that nobody knew about until the internet gave them access beyond their backyard.
