Nutro Large Breed Lamb & Rice , Pro Plan, or other food!!!
Hey guys i have an issue here with dog food. First I have yellow lab who is 5yrs.old but has a issue with his skin especially in the summer. I always have to take him to the vet to get cortisone shots, and they could get expensive. some vets are saying food allergies!!!! I think sometimes is just a way for them to make more money. He is fine in the winter months most of the time. Nutro is expensive and is around $53.00 for a 35lb bag. I was thinking of switching to Pro Plan, what do you think? Nutro is supposed to be good for his digestive tract with less land mines(if you know what I mean)and is supposed to be good for his coat. He has been on it for 4 yrs, but they keep raising the price and is really getting on my nerves. I tried Science diet, Bill jac, eukanuba to see what could help his skin. I also noticed he gets ear infections in only one ear all the time. i am trying to see if it is the food. I heard some guys talking about Pro Plan in the purple bag, you think this could help? thanks for the info

If cost was a concern, I would choose Diamond every time! By far the best for the price.

I think all dog food is a scam. Look at the ingredients on the bags of the most expensive and the cheapest. Its the same percentages and ingredients. I feed my Chesapeake (Retriever/Hi Protein) from tractor supply ($19.99) 50 lb bag. He acts and looks the same as when I fed him $50 bags and up. A cheap bag of Kibbles and Bits has the same ingredients and percentages as abag of Purina Pro or anything else.

I just switched foods again and Sadie has some skin conditions popping up, scratching, scabbing of skin and clumping of hair on those scabs... I wash her weekly. Switching off Science Diet she can't handle it. Aimee my 1 year old eats anything. Sadie's issue is she has a HORRIBLE stomach so I have to watch her closely and ease her into any food changes.

Re: Nutro Large Breed Lamb & Rice , Pro Plan, or other food!
http://www.diamondpet.com/products/diam ... _for_dogs/Diamond performance 30-20. About $26. Lots of chicken, beet pulp, eggs and fish meal. You will not find that in store brand or "cheap" dog food. The ingredients are not the same. If they were it would not be cheap. Diamond is the least expensive quality product you can find. Cost difference between Eukanuba, Hills or proplan and Diamond is advertising dollars. If Diamond sponsored the Westmeinster it would be $50 too.

pro plan purple.
very happy with it.
trainer was using it and dog looked great when he came back, so I stayed with it.
As far as summer issue. may be a heat rash of some sort.
I did something this year I have never heard of, and thought was kind of stupid but did it anyway with great results. I had him shaved/trimmed for the summer. It has been great, and not near as bad of odor problem and shedding all over the place.

Re: Nutro Large Breed Lamb & Rice , Pro Plan, or other food!
just remember you get what you pay for. Would you feed your Kid slop? I get my Nutro from Pet smart, they about the cheapest place. I have tried the tractor supply food, Pro Pland (silver bag),and also Euk. and all 3 of my dogs stomachs agreed to the nutro alot better than the others mentioned. All their coats are shinny and beautiful. My vet likes the outcome and so do I. just my opinion...I don't eat garbage so I'm not goona give it to my pets.

Re: Nutro Large Breed Lamb & Rice , Pro Plan, or other food!
Since I've had my pup, he's been eating Authority (Pet Smart's exclusive brand) Puppy Food with Real Chicken for large breed. I match the ingredients with other major brand and it seems to be on par or above a few. it's not expensive as most but not as cheap as some. So far my pup loves it. He's gaining weight as he is supposed too. Stomachs it very well.

Re: Nutro Large Breed Lamb & Rice , Pro Plan, or other food!
Would you rather spend a few bucks more a bag for dogfood, or spend a hell of alot of money at the vets???? Say you spend even $10 more per bag for dogfood. A dog will eat about a bag per month, so anotherwords you are spending about $120 more per year. One vet visit and medications will eat that up in no time! There are alot of good dogfood manufacturers out there that produce food exclusively for dogs with sensitivity. Check out this food http://www.eaglepack.com/product-origna ... product=83 I have put alot of client dogs with ear infections and skin problems on it and only the most severe cases are not cleared up by it. Enhance is a great food and a great price...Fat/Protein levels range from 30/22 to 22/12. Depending on how hard your working your pup. I stick with the hunter's edge year round and love it!

Re: Nutro Large Breed Lamb & Rice , Pro Plan, or other food!
you get what you pay for is right! look at the ingredients! i've been working for Petco for 5 years and did a ton of research when it comes to food. I've talked to just about every sales rep we have. I've got my dog on Natural Balance A.M.P. formula (Agility, Muscle, Performance). It's not cheap but it's the best food on the market if you ask me. I get a kick reading the label of some of the crap they sell at Wally World. 1st ingredient is corn... WONDERFUL!!! do you think your dog gets anything from that? look at ya shit the next time you eat corn and let me know if your body is processing that corn then tell me your dog is too! Yeah, feeding your dog ol roy isn't going to kill him just like feeding your kid hotdogs every night isn't going to hurt him either. but doing that for 10 years and you are going to have some issues eventually. and by the way, Petco price matches any instore prices so come give me your money!

I feed Pride 24/20. It's an all meat protein food with very low ash. $18.00/50 lbs too.

Re: Nutro Large Breed Lamb & Rice , Pro Plan, or other food!
Your describing the same issues Sadie goes through. I had to put her on antibiotics to help her ears which in turned helped her skin. I have to give her drops once a week as preventative maintenance in her ears she's had major problems with them including Yeast infections & even had a tear in her ear drum which made me pull her the last month of duck season last year.
