 Heartworms and Heartgaurd
Wife just picked up our 10 year old lab from the vet today and was told he had heartworms. Fortunately it is a "mild" case and the vet says it shouldn't be hard to cure. While I was talking to him on the phone he told me that he has had multiple cases of heartworms in dogs taking HeartGuard Heartworm pills. I have given my lab heartguard religously for nine years without one missed month.
Apparently it is a problem because Heartguard didn't even argue when we contacted them about paying the bill.
The Vet said that he has heard of this in La, Ms, E Tx, and S Ar.
Hope it don't happen to one of ya'll.

 Re: Heartworms and Heartgaurd
My father had 2 labs dat got heartworms while on heartgaurd and he two was never late on a dose. Dat is why I have my dog on da ProHeart Injection it's done every 6 months (but I give it to him every 5 months) and is claimed to be more effective. Either way neither prevent your dog from gettin heartworms. Da way it works is it kills da larva as soon as it enters da dog, it is not a vaccine.

I know a guy up at Caddo Lake whose dog was on Heartguard and caught heartworms and they picked up the bill. Hope your pup has a full and speedy recovery.

 Re: Heartworms and Heartgaurd
My wife works at Atchafalaya Animal Clinic. She said that Interceptor heartworm pill is the only way to go. There have been no cases of this in dogs on this pill. She told me that with mosquitos being so thick around here, Heartguard is just not strong enough and that is a common problem with Heartguard users.

 Re: Heartworms and Heartgaurd
He was regular 1rst day of every month. Mail the house note and give the heartguard. I'll find out more on Monday when the wife takes him to the vet for treatment. I was told 4 - 6 weeks of keeping him cool and calm. HE IS LAB. Cool easy wondering about the calm part. Kind of a good thing I'm offshore He is getting treatment with some shots. Any of y'all been through this before? What can I expect will he be tired, sick, etc? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Vet said he might be ready for teal season. I hope so. It'd be the first teal season in 10 years w/o him.

 Re: Heartworms and Heartgaurd
damn if he's 10 yrs old just trade him in for a new one...... put da money you'd spend on da treatment towards a puppy. ain't it like $600 or sumthin???
just kiddin bro. lol
I had one I treated at 8 yrs old, she lived to be 15. She didn't show any signs of abnormality. It just sucks having to keep them in a box for that long only lettin em out to shit & piss on a leash. If it's mild he'll be alright. good luck!

 Re: Heartworms and Heartgaurd
I had a female diagnosed with heartworms at 9 years of age. Wasn't going to subject her at that age to the harsh treatment for the heartworms. Kept her on the Heartguard and she hunted till she was 12, she didnt stop because o the heartworms it was her joints, and lived to be 15 with NO problems. She picked up a lot of chickens in all those years too.

 Re: Heartworms and Heartgaurd
My old man had two dogs get heartworms while on Heartgard, also. He was always time and never missed a dose. He always bought his online so the vet told him to bring in all his receipts, cancelled checks, or statements showing he was giving heartgard and the manufactuer would pick up the tab. They were treated and he never paid a dime. I have been using Inteceptor for at least 10 years on my dogs and haven't had a problem yet. Besides, I dose mine ever 4 weeks.

 Re: Heartworms and Heartgaurd
Heart guard is becomming well known for this. The yay it works is when you give your dog hearg guard it kills whatever he/she already has. It is out of their system in 3-4 days. There is a 6 mounth shot that you can get from your vet that stays in their system for the whole six months and prevents them whereas heartguard only kills off what is already there. They can be comined also. That's what i do. via vet

 Re: Heartworms and Heartgaurd
Thats what the vet is going to give my dog. It's called proguard or proheart can't remember off the top of my head. It's good for 6 months. The vet I use in Lafayette says that it is the only formula he hasn't seen problems with in the last year. He is recommending it for all dogs. Before the second shot he recommends some blood work to ensure the dog isn't reacting to the medicine.
Hope this post saves some of you headaches or possible heartaches.

 Re: Heartworms and Heartgaurd
I live 5 miles from the Mississippi River and Heartworms have ravaged dogs in this area. I use Ivormec monthly dosed to the dogs weight and have never had a case of heartworms. I am pro trainer so I have up 20 labs in my kennels this time of year. If your dog has a mild case(light positive) I suggest putting your dog on advantage multi for 6 months and retest. Lots of folks are having success with this regiment. Beats putting your dog thru the treatment. JPaul Jackson at Lone Oak retrievers has had great success with this program.
