Got my dog from trainer about a month agoshe is 1year and 3months. She did 8months there came out handles well, retrives good and is learning to keep her eys on the sky. When we have doubles hit the water she is great about picking up one but not sure if she gets to exited or just dosent mark the second but I will send her out and if they r on the far side of decoys she will come back after checking to make sure the decoys are empty i can throw a rock at it and she will pick it up but ......Wondering opinions on when to introduce the back command and best teaching tech. tips....Thx

Buy the book "Water Dog" by Richard A. Wolters

It will teach ya everything you need to turn that pup into a solid retriever.

The back command should have been introduced when the dog retrieved it's first dummy!

Thanks for the help, working it out.......Buddy had the DVD's and my trainer showed me how to get what im looking for so she is on her way now. Thnk im gonna watch them anyway sounds like good stuff. Crazy to see how fast she went from looking at the ground and all around on Hunt #1 to steady watching the sky picking up on everything waiting on my shot in just 4 hunts

As a general rule.....well, actually for most, a dog retrieves a mark when released with it's name.

In modern programs, the process of force fetch is employed. Therefore, a dog knows what fetch means in that context. The continuation of force fetch (FF) includes walking fetch, stick fetch (for some) and force to pile. Once the pup (dog) understands force to pile with the fetch command, the new command of "back" is "chained". What this means is if you say "fetch/back" close together eventually the dog will go on just "back" when you cease saying fetch. Fetch is eliminated.

Having done this, the dog now has two release commands 1) "name" for a marked retrieve and 2) "back" for a blind retrieve. They know the difference....if you've introduced them properly.

I'd be on the phone questioning the trainer that had your dog for "8" months and wanting to know what I got for all that money. Did you work with your dog and trainer before leaving the kennel to makes sure you were all on the same page? 8 forkin months is a long time to be with a trainer and then you not be able to handle him with basic backs and overs.

i agree with above 8 months is a very long time to be with a trainer and not be able to run blinds.

The book is very out dated and so is the dvd its just show much. I would go with Mike lardy program or evan graham.

The "Smart Works" system is a very good program. "Duck Dog Basics" by Chris Akins.
