I used blue buffalo for a while with my pup, but it gave him alot of gas , so I switched to natural balance grain free salmon. His coat is just as pretty, and thick. Minus the gas. Blue buffalo is a great food, my dog just didn't take to it very well. I almost started him on pro-plan. Vet said its a very low quality dog food.

No he sales science diet. Natural balAnce and blue buffalo are mid grade foods . Besides dry dog foods really are not that healthy for dogs anyway. It's easy to preserve and less exspensive . I can't afford wet my best alternative is dry . Most grains are bad for dogs. Pro plan is packed with grains ( corn is the worst one, pro plan had it in its food). How many dogs you see eating corn?

Just curious as to why you think Purina pro plan performance 30/20 purple bag is so good? I too have been told by several vets that Purina is low quality. Have you looked at the ingredients and done any research? Or are you just basing it off your dog's performance? Not trying to start crap, just seeing if you know something no one else does.

Ever consider that the dogs that were taken off of it, were either (A) put on food that was even worse in quality, or (B) put on a food that didn't match well with the dog? If you're happy with it and so is your dog then great, more power to ya.

However you look at it Purina Pro Plan has several ingredients that are undesirable for dog digestion. I have been told by several Vets that Purina pro plan is low quality, and I assure you that the vets I talked to are no "F'n idiots". They are the leading researchers and directors in animal science at one of the best AG science/research schools in the nation.

Don't be fooled by the pretty packaging, brand name, marketing, and what "others feed their dogs". Read the ingredients. Try and stay away from by-products, corn, low quality grain, and fillers. Maybe get multiple vet opinions. Like I said earlier I'm not trying to start crap, just wanted to see if you knew something we didn't. I'm always trying to find the best for my dog, just as you! Thanks for sharing.

The better quality the food the less they will crap for the most part . When my pup was on Purina puppy chow he crapped Alot. Then when I put him on natural balance , I fed him less and he crapped less. Had to cut back on his food with the natural balance he was getting fat eating less food

If you don't want to break the bank, look at Diamond NATURALS. It's a pretty good food that is available at most feed stores and co-ops. Make sure you get the naturals and not the regular. Big difference in quality between the two. You may be able to buy in bulk and get it cheaper.

I'm using blue buffalo wilderness salmon and have had really good results. It's a bit more expensive though.

I've tried blue buffalo, bil jac, nutro naturals and my dog would crap like crazy on all of em soft/runny depending on brand switched over to fromm gold and the first day he was on it he had no other problems. It took me almost a year before I found a food he would do good on.

Tried Nitro, Purina, Diamond, Loyall, and River Run over the years. River Run has proven to be the best and is what I use now. Loyall I find to be the best for puppy formulated feed, and I feed them that for the first 6 - 8 months before I switch them to River Run. This is just what I found works best for my dogs. Not all dogs respond the same to the same feed. Find what does best for yours. But give the food at least two months before deciding, unless your dog show serious negative effects. Also too high of protein can cause runny shits, so don't automatically go for the highest blend %.

You can get a good food at a much better price.
http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com breaks down the good, the bad and the ugly.

I hate telling people what to feed their dog. Everyone seems to have preferences. I always hated Science Diet and thought it was expensive. After talking with my vet, who sells it, I'm thinking of making a change. It's only a few bucks more per bag. What I like about it, they never had recalls, they make their own food in their own factory and don't produce for others. Their meat products, before it goes through the doors of the factory, IS for human consumption. Their chicken is brought in by Tyson. Yes the same company that supplies chicken for humans. All their ingrediants are stored in cold rooms.
Is it better? IDK.
Is he feeding me a line of BS? Possibly, but he has told me that they only make enough on all the food they sell to pay for one vet tech.

He also mentions alot of myths that go along with dog foods. Corn, grains, raw diets, etc. Got me to thinking. Here is one thing he told me dogs/k9s are omnivors. They eat meat, grasses and grains.

The choice is yours. Find something you feel comfortable with and go with it.

Funny how vets even have a difference of opinion. Geeze. That said I guess dogfoodadvisor has a pretty good ranking system.

Chad,

Been feeding Harley the Hills Z/D food from the Vet. That stuff is high as giraffe pussy! For a 20-25lb bad is around 90-95 dollars. I bought a 44lb bag of Dr. Tims Pursuit online from pet flow and only paid 70 or so dollars for it if I remember right. Haven't tried my two labs on it yet but will start them on it when I get home to see how they do on it. But Harley has been doing good on the Hills Z/D food. Its just really expensive for such a little amount of food.
