I used blue buffalo for a while with my pup, but it gave him alot of gas , so I switched to natural balance grain free salmon. His coat is just as pretty, and thick. Minus the gas. Blue buffalo is a great food, my dog just didn't take to it very well. I almost started him on pro-plan. Vet said its a very low quality dog food.

Any way , out of season I feed a lower protein diet and during season I'd add protien for the high activity

The better quality the food the less they will crap for the most part . When my pup was on Purina puppy chow he crapped Alot. Then when I put him on natural balance , I fed him less and he crapped less. Had to cut back on his food with the natural balance he was getting fat eating less food

If you don't want to break the bank, look at Diamond NATURALS. It's a pretty good food that is available at most feed stores and co-ops. Make sure you get the naturals and not the regular. Big difference in quality between the two. You may be able to buy in bulk and get it cheaper.

I'm using blue buffalo wilderness salmon and have had really good results. It's a bit more expensive though.

Hi Tek Rations (Intimidator) is great food, 31-21 for hunting season, and 28-18 for off season. Pretty big company and pretty sure LA has it

I've tried blue buffalo, bil jac, nutro naturals and my dog would crap like crazy on all of em soft/runny depending on brand switched over to fromm gold and the first day he was on it he had no other problems. It took me almost a year before I found a food he would do good on.

Tried Nitro, Purina, Diamond, Loyall, and River Run over the years. River Run has proven to be the best and is what I use now. Loyall I find to be the best for puppy formulated feed, and I feed them that for the first 6 - 8 months before I switch them to River Run. This is just what I found works best for my dogs. Not all dogs respond the same to the same feed. Find what does best for yours. But give the food at least two months before deciding, unless your dog show serious negative effects. Also too high of protein can cause runny shits, so don't automatically go for the highest blend %.
