If it's above 60 degrees I wouldn't let him swim. Especially if you know it's populated with them.

I hunt the piss out my dog in gator paradise Lake Boeuf in Southeast La with Salad Shoota and wont even think of working Gumbo until gators get few and far between so he is sidelined for teal season in September but I cut him loose for the first split in November... Poor bastard is twitchin and itchin to work!

Sounds like you are going to be hunting seminole...I never used my dogs there until after the first frost and if it warmed up to where my jacket comes off the dog doesn't get in the water. I know of a few folks who have lost dogs there hunting when it was warm....I have lost them up the flint near Albany when the weather was warm myself. You will see them when it is cool but they won't hardly move and they don't seem to be interested in eating either.

Gators start to brumate (kinda like hibernate) when the temp stays below around 72 degrees. If it ain't cold, leave the dog at home.
