Post spade or no spade?
my 1.5 year old lab has got a new habbit of wanting to mark everything in sight when we leave our house even inside other peoples house sometimes. i have no plans to stud my dog and was considering getting them chopped. i know this usually kills the desire to want to mark but also heard stories about losing drive after the chop which would be unacceptable.

any opionions?

Rule # 1 - doesn't have the bloodline to be a breedable stud
#2 doesn't have the background are any reason to prove he's worth breeding
#3 it will cure the problems u r having only if done rite away and doesn't become a natural habit
#4 heard from other hunters the dog needs to calm down a tremendous bit  said his howling and whining and lack of control of him was unbearable :lol::lol::lol::lol:

A note on pedigrees, they are as good as a pieace of toilet paper, just because the dog is breed out the ass dose not mean its gonna have more drive than another.. For breeding purposes okay they help a lot... But if the dog is not trained properly it dose not matter what is on his pedigree, hell his parents could be grand masters but that dose not mean that he or she will be, nor dose it matter anyway.. I will say to game over that from my expierance a male with nuts is way more hard headed than one with out, they love to see what they can get away with and what they can't... If your not gonna stud him out get them cut, I have not had a male lose the drive because his nuts are gone..

Aka just thinks he has best dogs in word yet I've seen them hunt and he stay lighting up that collar he has trained them field trial shit and trained not to use natural instincts. it's sad to see a dog try to do right thing and follow his nose to a injured bird and dumbass owner shock it and tell it go opposite way where he thought he saw bird fall. He self proclaimed "trainer" who majority of customer pull there dogs before even finishes OB bc he put dog at vet for busting ears on pinch collar or when u tell heel and try and pet it it cowards down bc it's been best so many times

Iam not gonna side with anyone, if your dog performs to your standards that's all that should matter.. If they screw up it's not the dogs fault and those that shock the hell out of them for that should wrap the collar around there own neck and turn it up and hold the button.. Like I have always said expiearce and time in the blind makes good dogs... I also understand that not everyone has the time to hunt and or train everyday or close to that on account of work and family... So with that make the outings fun and enjoyable for you and your dog if they screw up don't get mad just heel him up and try again..

Post Re: spade or no spade?
To the OP:

In general, it's always been my experience to NOT neuter a male until he turns two. The reason is to let his muscle mass develop fully as his testosterone peaks.

You can limit the leg hiking by going back through your OB program and instilling higher standards. "Here" means here right now, "heel" means heel right now...no screwing around and peeing/pooping while we're working.

While you're upping your OB standards, chain in a "potty" command. I do this with all my dogs...they soon come to learn that if I say "go potty", that means they're free to go pee, poo, sniff around, etc.. While they're under command (working), they know not to sniff around and relieve themselves.

One thing to keep in mind is all dogs (but particularly uncut males) have a natural need to scent mark, so you're not going to eliminate it by neutering...you might reduce it some. But first, I would try to control it through strict OB and allowing the dog some "off" time to do what comes naturally.

As far as some of the other comments and opinions on this thread regarding pedigrees, e-collars and "trained dogs", I find some of the comments unknowledgeable at best, ignorant at worst.

A nice pedigree is not a guarantee the dog is going to be a superstar, but it generally DOES make the dog much easier to train. Again...GENERALLY. Everyone knows (or has heard) of a non-pedigreed dog that is an awesome dog. Likewise, everyone knows (or has heard) of a super-pedigreed dog that didn't amount to anything. These are exceptions to the rule.

I prefer to stack the odds in my favor and buy well-pedigreed dogs because I've already tried to make chicken salad out of chicken chit....it ain't worth my time or frustration, but YMMV.

A fully trained dog is one that will do what is natural at the proper time, but then responds to your commands when necessary or desired. How far a trainer wants to take this depends on their personal standards and what game(s) they play.
Knocking Field Trials (which AKA does NOT play) reveals just how little some people know about that game.

The key to achieving a fully trained dog is to know how and when to use praise and discipline in a fair, systematic manner so the dog understands what is expected of them. That applies to simple meat dogs all the way up to National Finalists.
