Post New pup
I'm getting a new lab. Had one before but he was wild as hell. Got run over when he was about 7months old. I wanna have a good hunting dog and don't have a clue where to start at. In need of some advice.

Discipline and hardcore hunting. And a good house dog during the summertime. I guess I can get one to do all that.

This is free without papers. I know the guy and hunted with his dog that had the pups. She did good last year just to be 8months old

Lot of advice out there, and some will disagree with me. The house dog part, socialize and spend as much time with it as possible. Discipline is extremely important, as well as patients. I like the Avery duck dog basics 1 & 2. I've been told on here that they suck, but Chris's method has helped me, and my dog. I'm not saying there is not a lot of good free advice, but if your like me, it will help to see the training process as it happens. Good luck!

That Hawaiian shirt wearing yellow in my avatar is 10.5 yrs. now. Sleeps at the foot of my bed in his crate and has all his life. Right now he is watching TV on his Orvis bed. Not sure how many days he has hunted or how many birds he has picked but last year he picked 24 in one day in Arkansas breaking ice. As long as the dog has drive and you keep up discipline even off season, he can hang out in the house and hunt hard.

That's what I've been wanting to hear. Hunting dog that can hang out in the off season. I'm sure my two boys will keep him busy.

Don't let those boys throw fetches for him or play tug-o-war. Kids can screw up a hunting dog faster then you would imagine. Got to get the whole family on board with training and discipline. I have a 4 month old at home now and it is everything I can do to keep my wife, who knows all the rules, from ruining him.

Yea my wife plays fetch with mine to run some of his energy off after letting him out of the kennel. She gives him some fun throws then makes him heal and stay before she sends him.

Not going to start the fight about who has the best training program. Do a search on here or ask your buddies for suggestions. Just find a program that fits you a.d stick with it.

Prolly gonna get my Bro n laws momma to do it for me. She is pretty badass with dogs. She has trained 4 that I know of. The one she has now looks like an old dump dog or some mix breed. It hunts really good.

So no fetch or tug a war with the kids. If kids play fetch do they: Just make sure to do it rite or Dont do it at all.

Let them help you not by themselves. Kids make great bird boys for throwing marks and setting out blinds.

Do at least some of it yourself. Half of what you will do is training you, the handler. You can have the best dog in the world but unless you have a connection and know how to make him go, it won't matter.

They don't help that u need to either have it in u and be able to read things very well by appearance or attitude or behaviors or get with a professional trainer u can understand what to do all day long but if not done at the rite time can still have a lot of mixed communicatiobs

I'm gonna have to learn all that myself just to teach him. Guess we will both be getting trained!
