Post Ivermectin
Does anyone use this instead of "main stream" medications for labs? We use it for our beagles and I know alot of people that use it for beagles and have not had any issues. Do you guys think it's okay for labs?

I used it back in late 70s and 80s on coon hounds Blueticks. My vet told me its great stuff but he could not suggest it for use. He told me that's the best for heart worm prevention.

It's the active ingredient in heart guard which is prescription-only where I live. Keep in mind that heart guard is made in doses that fit ranges of weights for animals. I don't know if they dose towards the bottom of the range or the top, but the range itself is pretty big.

By using the active ingredient, one is able to dose their animal to its specific weight. I'm no vet, but the way I look at it is the only thing you lose by using ivermectin over heart guard is the guarantee provided by heart guard to cover the cost of heartworm treatment provided you keep all of your records.

I get mine at the local co-op. Anywhere where they sell cattle supplies should have some. And look for a generic brand. Same stuff

One more thing...... get the smallest cheapest bottle you can find. It'll last forever being that it's sold for use on cattle. The dosage goes way-way-way down for dogs

Sounds like I just saved alot of cash. I think it will also kill heart worms in larger doses if they are contracted.

It might, but I don't recommend it. My neighbor tried that to avoid the vet bill. Kill too many at once and the dog doesn't survive. That's something better left to a competent vet to treat. Using it as a preventative works fine though.

Yea I wouldn't use it for an adult heart worm cure, but if you slightly increase the dosage to somewhere around .11 or .12 CC/ 10lb body weight (look it up to be sure), that small increase is what kills other worms. The .10 CC/ 10 lb body weight is just enough to kill the baby heartworms and prevent them from settling in.

I've never had a dog with heart worms and haven't done much research, but doesn't a vet's heartworm treatment involve injecting arsenic into the spine?

Not my vet. We had a dog show up at the house a few years ago. Did 2 rounds of doxycycline, which weakened the worms, then did a pill, though I don't remember what, I think it was ivermectin based. Heartguard for 5 months (because it prevents, doesnt kill), 6 months later, did it again, all worms gone after that.
There was an outbreak of heartworms in the area where some of the heartworm medications weren't preventing them, my in laws had 2 lab mutts get milder infestations. The doxy treatment took care of them, been negative since. All my dogs gets proheart (Its a 6 month hw preventative), never had an issue, and it was one of the ones that proved effective during that year when heartguard and some others weren't working as well.

Just started using ivermectin on my 5 dogs at 0.1cc per 10 pounds (Veterinarian recommendation). All are still alive with no side effects this far. Sometimes the Heartgard would make them yak. They did not with Ivermectin.

It shouldn't cause an issue unless it causes a kill of heartworms. I recommend for anyone switching to that route to at least get a heartworm test just to make sure it comes back negative. Even being on heartguard without missing, dogs have been proven to be able to get heartworms if it's that resistant strain that reared its ugly head a few years ago.

Before you use it I'd research some more on using horse/cattle wormer on dogs. Lots of issues neurologically can come up.

I have a lab going on 13yrs this year...He has been on this his whole life. The dog was given to me by a professional trainer. That trainers vet is where he would get it....I imagine if a vet believes its the right thing then its ok...

I believe the active ingredient in most "pills" is Ivermec...

No one is saying it's wrong, just that there's a right way to make the transition, and the wrong way can be dangerous in the outlier of cases. It's not hard to get the heartworm test first.
