how much lower unit oil will a 36pd hold

Its less than a qt,,,,,,,,,,,, Not sure of the exact amount. When its running out the top hole as you fill from the bottom its full.

I tried to put lower unit oil today from the bottom and I had a big issue. How do you do it right? I did it from the top until it started coming out from the bottom, is this fine or should I do it over? thanks for the help, first time owner.

same here you can get a pump at auto part store to pump it in but i dont know if it will fitt the pro drive. i just put my bottom plug in and filled it through the top until it was full. i cranked my motor and ran it for a minute and let the oil settle and went back out to check it, when i unscrewed the top plug oil was coming out so im calling it good. it held almost a whole quart

I actually fill mine from the top. On my old style LU I could insert the tip of the gear bottle spout into the hole and get a seal because the plug holes were smaller on that model. On my new style the plug hole is larger and it hits the drive shaft so I cant get a good seal and it makes a big azz mess. So I fill it from the top. PD says fill it from the bottom like an outboard though which forces out air as it fills. Filling from the top could leave a air pocket which would leave the level low as it settled later. So I do take care when I fill it, hand turn the prop a few times and then let it settle awhile before closing it up to be sure its full.

if u go to walmart and buy the outboard lower unit oil pump for about 10$. it makes it easy. same thread for all outboards/pd.

u do it just like any other outboard lower unit.


one end screws into the lower hole in the pd foot.
other end screws onto the quart of gear oil.
open the hole in the middle of the lower unit. [new style.

pump the pump till the fresh oil comes out the hole u just opened.

stop pumping, replace middle cap.

unscrew pump end that is screwed into pd lower unit. replace cap.



put tools up and wash hands.

go to http://www.prodriveoutboards.com and download the owners manual and see if u did it right.

The old lower units had the same size fitting as outboards but I think the new ones are bigger. I had an outboard LU kit that worked great on my old unit but when I went to change the oil on my new unit, I realized the fitting had changed. I think it's 1/4" now but that is a complete guess.

i checked mine today after replacing it yesterday and everything is good. i have a pump i use to pump oil into my yamaha on my bass boat and the threads are way smaller than the pd.

You can get a 1/4" NPT fitting with a nipple on it at Lowes that can replace the fitting on your pump. It's in the pipe/tubing section.

thanks ill remeber that and try it next time. hopefully wont make such a mess
