if it is for the family, try net traps, my oldest son loves it. kids can be hands on. to run wire traps you need a commercial licenes. by the time you get that and bait you might be better buying acouple of sacks.

You can run up to 35 traps W/O com. license..all you need is a recreational license...10 maybe 15 bucks

Dude youre pissin in the wind with 35 traps.By the time that you add in travel time, gas in the truck and boat, bait, and wire for the traps you are already in the hole for atleast a grand for the season.I have 400 traps and year before last I told myself that I was only going to run 50 that year for the freezer and a few boils. After all the cost were added up it would have been cheaper for me to buy crawfish at $4.00 a pound.

Lets say that you drive 20 miles round trip,2 hours time total from the launch and back to the launch, bait at $30.00,a roll of wire at $280.00 or $13.00 dollars a trap iffin you buy them already built. All of that time and money could add up to a 1/2 of sack of crawfish.

I am not trying to discourage you just telling how it is.

I was just saying that you don't need a commercial license to run traps.

LAWD DUCK HUNTING : BOAT- 10-20 grand
GUN: 300-1,000 dollars
SHELLS: 100 plus dollars
DECOYS: 100 plus dollars
GAS for one season: 100 plus
Clothing: 200 dollars
So what you saying is we should all stop duck hunting and just buy ducks, it would be cheaper , right.
I would suggest look online at traps and figure it out from there, maybe look at one and copy it. you can get the 36" galvanized single roll wire for recreational use it is way cheaper. Search crawfish traps, someone was talking about some last week.

Thanks for the suggestions! I live on the swamp that I will be fishing so I am not too worried about fuel issues :) I saved a bunch of bait from the fish that i caught last year. I am thinking about going with the piramid style traps.

Few more ??'s

Being from north la. , What should the water temp be when they get to moving well?

What kinda numbers sould I expect for each trap to catch to determine if I am in the right spot or not?

Go to any small grocery store and see if they have any whole corn on the cob they are throwing out because its old. We can get it free around here. Shuck it and put it in your trap. That works well to hold them for a few days if you let them soak for a while and cant get to them. If you have them and you run out of feed they will leave the trap. If you are gonna build the traps go with 3/4 mesh. If the mesh is too small you will have too many small crawfish and if its bigger than 3/4 you may not get many crawfish at all.

you can get the pond style traps in jonesville. if that is close to you. if you just want a couple of traps i would buy premades. they are catching crawfish in some ponds already. try putting out afew traps, and run them once aweek. the crawfish will let you know. right now it is alittle cold to catch them in the woods.
