Re: Texas deputy and teacher layoffs
ha!!!! we are a right to work state. If the state cant pay for you to continue to work then they layoff. Which would you rather have short term layoffs or increased taxes tha NEVER go down? It sucks to get laid off but when you work for the public sector or private sector it happens.....too bad the unions force the layoffs of the younger guys and dont look at performance to keep the better performing deputies and teachers at work but hey....thats a union fer ya. I own my business and am considering a second job now. business is slow...my business creates state and local taxes. If i aint doin the work i did previously, the state and local tax revenue goes down. I hate to say it, but I would rather see you laid off untill the economy pics up than to have my taxes raised permenantly. At least you have the opportunity to look for work though.

Re: Texas deputy and teacher layoffs
Ok, hold up. This wasn't about union or non-union. It was about the fact that the 2 of the most important fields of the public sector are bein laid off. While your kids are gettin dumber because the teachers are bein laid off, and your trucks & homes are burglerized & nothing's being done about it because the deputies & police officers are being laid off, the fat cats in state & local politics are steadily lining their pockets & not even taking any pay cuts. That's what pisses me off, the ones that are really needed to educate & teach our future are the ones that are losing their jobs, while "the man" keeps livin large. I agree with Rob, it is and always has been BULLSHIT.

Re: Texas deputy and teacher layoffs
I been predicting for over 20 years that we will see large scale civil unrest in this country during my lifetime. Everyone thought I was being paranoid and laughed. But in the last couple years they can see that I might be on to something with the recent happenings. I spent a dozen years as a police officer and have always been the first to tell folks that you are your own "first line of defense". If your depending on someone else to protect you and your property your forked. Most of my friends are in LE but the truth is by the time they get the call, they will get to the scene just in time to pick up the pieces. 95% of the time its over by then. Burglars are in and out of your car or house in a matter of minutes. Violent crime takes place in a matter of seconds. Be prepaired or be a victim. As far as teachers, unfortunately they are fighting a battle that is out of their control. They can only do what they can do and without a firm home structure set down by parents its fruitless for some. I see no good outcome there in the long haul.

Re: Texas deputy and teacher layoffs
As far as that goes, you're right, it will get worse over time. It's inevitable.
As for before, Don't mistake me, I'm not sayin it's the teachers' jobs alone to teach our kids, but they're with them for 6-8 hrs a day in the classroom. That is where most of their education is coming from, unless ya home school em. As far as LEO's preventing every crime, we all know there's no way that's possible. Being one for 12 yrs, ya have to admit that the mear chance of gettin caught is enough to prevent most would-be crooks from breakin the law. The point I was makin was that with less teachers, the classrooms will have a higher student to teacher ratio, resulting in less time for any kids having problems in certain areas to get one on one time with teachers. With less LEOs on the streets, those would-be crooks won't be as scared of gettin caught because the cops will be spread too thin to get anywhere in a reasonable amount of time. I, too, spent a few yrs in law enforcement, so yeah, it pisses me off to see the guys that are out there tryin to protect & serve gettin laid off while the officials are still in office. I hate seeing anyone lose their jobs, but why does it always start with the front lines, instead of the guys in the back offices takin a pay cut? I know that'll never happen, but it still sucks.

Re: Texas deputy and teacher layoffs
I would say it is time to look at the education structure and extracaricular activities in public education, and if so jobs would be lost. As for deputies being laid off, I don't like it but it shows the desperate situation we are in. It shows how dependante the state and local governments are on state sales tax....the economy ain't that good, either nobodys spending or nobody got any money...and fed money coming back to the state has been cut.........elections have consiquences.

Re: Texas deputy and teacher layoffs
Y'all can't be so blind as to not see we have all been raped by big corporate greed for so long that we now find ourselves unable to recover quickly in reversing the trend in wealth disparity. If we swing back to a pro corporate administration, I'm afraid this country might be permanently damaged.

Re: Texas deputy and teacher layoffs
Its corp greed that forced the state of texas to lay off these workers?......how about a sh!try president leading thecountry to economic ruin. I think these lay offs are due to the cut backs at the fed level. Remember that stimulous package? Tarp? Auto union bailouts? No wonderthe fed taxes we pay and get a portion back of is gone. obama would rather launch 1.5 mil a piece rockets into the desert between rounds of golf and partying in south america than help the states.

Re: Texas deputy and teacher layoffs
This is just the beginning men. I'm an accountant for a local school board in la. We have reduced force across the district 3 times in the last five years. We need to do it again but our board is opting to deplete the remaining fund balance to cover our deficits. I literally just came back from our annual business conferences with my peers. Most districts will be reducing workforce in la and across the nation. The sky may not be falling but I would estimate that around 30 percent of school districts nationwide are two years out from bankruptcy. You could say the same for many state and city governments. There will be a reckoning in 2013 if things don't turn around.
