 Ringing in da ear
Here lately I've been wearing ear plugs while running the boats at work. This is due to the ringing in my left ear. I believe that constant exsposer to the engine has caused this hearing problems. Have any of yall experienced this? Any remedies out there? Not wanting to seem to act like the OSHA man at work but I recommend to all to wear ear protection. even if it is just in the ear facing the motor.

 Re: Ringing in da ear
Hearing loss is permanent. It is a good idea to wear ear protection. There is no remedy to make the ringing stop, once that happens, the damage is done.
I don't remember the exact numbers, but I think it was something like anything over 90db for an extended amount of time will cause permanent damage. Anything around 120 and up will cause it immediately. You can google those numbers to verify...

 Re: Ringing in da ear
If the circumstances permit, I wear Skullcandy earphones hooked to the iPhone. If you use the correct earpiece they will cancel the noise, just as well as earplugs plus you get your tunes. You can probably get away with them in the boat.

 Re: Ringing in da ear
I figured I was screewed to begin with use to shoot trap league and never wore any earplugs. Damn ears would ring all night. I wish I would have when I was younger cause I have already failed to hearing test. It was always on the high pitch notes. Im only 29 and have bad hearing. nobodys fault but my own.

 Re: Ringing in da ear
Brother in law was member of Tulane's skeet and trap team and permanently damaged his hearing. He has to wear noise canceling headphones when he's in the blind. Cost us a 12 point deer one year when we were hunting in a pirogue and he couldn't hear me tell him we had just spooked a huge deer to my left about 20 yards. I was in the back paddling and could not shoot. Had to hit him on the head with the paddle to get his attention by which time the deer had crossed right in front of us and was gone. One of our most memorable experiences... You know, the one you tell over and over again at the camp when you're drunk.

 Re: Ringing in da ear
It's called tinitus (sp?) and yep, got that too. I got mine due to listening to music too loud with the headphones as well as working with bands. The sound is like after a loud rock concert, but it never goes away.
There have been some that have gone crazy and committed suicide because of the constant ringing in their ears (it's more like a high pitched sound than ringing). I figure it this way, I did it to myself so I have no one to blame than myself so I just deal with it. Most times there's always some other sounds around so I don't notice it too much.
Take care of your ears boys & girls.

My mom has constant ringing in her ears she has vertigo because of it and sometimes will go through spells where she has to lay flat on the floor the ringing / diagnosis the docs gave her was that she has meniere's disease.

 Re: Ringing in da ear
After I got my ears checked I finally got proof that I'm not ignoring my wife I just can't hear her. Too many power tools and firearms in my youth. Noone to blame but myself. I got those inside the ear hearing aid looking shooting ear plugs. Man are they worth the money.

 Re: Ringing in da ear
I have it too. Too much time around guns I guess. Mine seems to vary in volume, from really annoying to almost nil. Every now and then it seems to go away entirely, but never for long, less than an hour. My doctor, who I have had for years and is well respected, didn't offer any solutions. You can find "cures" on the 'net with a search, but I've never tried any of them.

 Re: Ringing in da ear
Just read that there are other things that can cause this. Like the medicine in ibuprofen/alieve can cause this. I've been taking alieve here recenlty and hope that is whats causing it. Still gonna wear the ear plugs in the boat though!

 Re: Ringing in da ear
Just over 3 years ago I actually died from respiratory failure. I slowly suffocated over the course of about a week. Not knowing what was goin on, my wife came home one day to find me layed out on the floor. She got me to the hospital where I was in and out of conscienceness. They put me in a medicated coma to slow things down. My liver, kidneys, and everything else had already shut down. Anyway, while being in this coma over the course of 28 days, they used some kind of super antibiotic on me. One of the side effects is hearing loss. I came out of a 28 day coma not knowing where I was, who I was, and was completely deaf. I gradually got some hearing back over a month or so. As of now, Im 80% deaf. That is what 3 different hearing specialist and LSU have established. I have hearing aids that I choose not to wear because I dont want to become dependant on them. I can read lips like nobodys business, but it does suck not being able to hear. I had perfect hearing for 30 years and all the sudden............gone. Protect your hearing . I cant stress that enough. The constant ringing I was told is your brain sending signals to itself trying to compensate for the sounds that you cant hear anymore. If that makes sense. My ears ring so bad that it gives me headaches. I have to have a tv or some kind of noise in the background to listen to. If I sit in a quiet room it is as if the ringing gets louder. Itll drive ya crazy.

 Re: Ringing in da ear
I have the ringing too and so do the three other guys I hunt with. Like the others have said, it's permanent and you can't do anything about it. I also know exactly when I caused it. When I first started deer hunting, I shot a doe in the head and she fell over and started running on the ground sideways. Since I didn't want her to suffer, I shot her another 2 times with my .270 WSM and was deaf for like 5 days out of my left ear. Eventually I got the hearing back but the ringing has never gone away. I still don't wear ear plugs when I deer hunt since it's usually only 1 shot but always do in the duck blind.

 Re: Ringing in da ear
I'm 29 and my hearing is shitty too, had a lot of ear infections and too many sets of tubes when I was little, now left with nerve damage in both. Audiologist wants to put me on hearing aides, but I wanna save that for later in life.
Tenpoint is right about the antibioitics, I have been warned that this could render me completely deaf if they use that grade antibiotic on me, though it could save my life.
My right ear has only about 10 percent hearing in it, sounds muffled and rings all the time, my left ear has around 50 percent left, I have to protect it with plugs, though half the time I don't have plugs with me. If I can see your mouth when you are talking to me, I can hear you, but in the car or back to me, I have a hard time with that. I struggle big time on the phone too, everything is muffled.
So protect your ears folks!

 Re: Ringing in da ear
Yea, forgot to mention another reason I got the ringing. I was with a padnah of mine and we went visit a co worker of his. While at his house we shot his 357 off the back patio. They were trying to precisely aim for the target, when my turn came around I let the bullets fly out of it like a machine gun. Quantity over quality And with no earplugs the ears were ringin' pretty good. Guess I shouldn't have done that

 Re: Ringing in da ear
Its funny how cowboys and WW1 & WW2 soldiers would blast 30-06 rounds 3 feet from another guys head in combat for a few years and we shoot 5 rounds and suffer hearing damage. Maybe ears aren't what they used to be?

 Re: Ringing in da ear
Had a hunting partner hang a wad in his barrel (dud shot) and the next volley blew a 3" chunk out of his barrel. My ear was very close. I am surprised I did not get fragged with schrapnel. As I type this, the ear is ringing bad. And I have hearing loss confirmed by an audiologist.
Once you get tinnitis (sp?) it is a done deal. No backing out of that shit.

Ol man has been workin on shrimp boats and chemical plant his whole life and he hears probably better then me. When he looks up the ducks are comin over or the deer are near by. Have learned to watch him over the years instead of lookin around.
