So I have reading lots about boats getting 'hooked'. I figured out what that is but am not sure what the drawback is... other than it looks bad and is irritating.

does it affect performance significantly? Mine appears to be badly hooked near the front from running up on my trailer. how might that affect me?

The back 1/3rd of your boat is what really will affect your running if hooked. Anything from halfway up, you should be OK.

hook will cup the water and drag your front down and depending on how bad it is, will kill your speed and make it SUCK FUEL . the farther back the worse it is. i hooked mine this weekend and knocked a golfball size hole in the bottom right at the transom. still working on it

My hook appears to be 5' from the bow on a 15' boat. so, 1/3 from the front. Guess it could be worse.

so what actually causes the Hook, running over logs or just general use after a while

Logs, rocks, improper trailering, stumps, fence posts....

Getting outside of the channel markers causes hooks basically.
