Id go for #2..... wintering birds do not need rest periods....there is plenty of private land that is not hunted and with all the closed sections they need.to alternate closed portions throughout the year.

I have mixed feelings about this, at times I'd like a continious season, but the break is nice and goes a long way in making the family happy, scouting, catching more football and getting a recharge for the closing split. Only thing I could say i'd definitely change is have teal season a tad bit later (maybe a week) and have the first half split start a week later, and the final weekend go a week later. But obviously that wasn't one of the optioins. So i'm sticking with status quo.

Definitely like the 1 and 1 for youth hunt. That opening youth hunt allows the kids to bust them why there young, while the closing youth will allow them to collect full plummaged birds and the bigger ducks we don't see until later on.

I agree with keeping splits, but the real question is about the dates they plan to open/close the season. You can chop up the days of the season any way you want to, but if the open and close dates remain relatively the same, then what are the real advantages here?

I agree. Keep it the way it is and just push the dates back a week or two.

I guess being close to the Mississippi River it is different on the east side of the state, because we start getting pretty good numbers of birds in October and I'd like to see it opened a week earlier.

But I'm in 100% agreement that I'd like to see a longer split and have the seaon opened till the last weekend of January.

The feds gives the states a window to have their season. Louisiana has allready opted to have it's season as late as possible. So pushing it back is not an option. This is set because some species of ducks start pairing up as early as Feb.
If we change anything I would like to go back to the 3 bird limit but keep the 60 day season.

Post Re: LA eyes duck hunt options!
When there was a 3 bird limit we had things to ourselves. There wasn't a soul around.
We USED to get very large amounts of birds in the Delacroix area in oct but those days seem like they are gone for good. There will be birds but not like we used to have them.

Letting season run 2 weeks longer will not help the coast. The only thing it will do is keep the birds out in the gulf or large lakes 2 weeks longer until season closes and then they will move back inside. Find an area on the coast that has very little pressure and you will find 10's of thousands of ducks. Go to an area that has mofo's in it everyday and boats crossing it every 15 minutes and there aren't as many birds.

I'm with QC I want lower limits! You youngsters will see it. Duck populations go up and down with the ponds in the breeding areas. Throughout history there have been years of high breeding success like now and drought like in the late 80's. When it happens you will see a mass exodus of duck hunters and deer leases in Mississippi will be full.

Our beloved sport has been whored out by those seeking to make a profit off all the homos in polos.

It's already pushed back as far as they can. If they would have left us in the east zone here we would still close the last weekend in January. I'm all for opening later and closing later but the Feds setup the time line and we cannot hunt into feb. I'd be happy if we ran until January 31 and let it close on whatever day it is.

90 days from November 15 to February 15 no split 6 bird limit. No more than 10 shells in possession.

Its getting damn ridiculous the shots some people are taking. There is absolutely no reason to shoot a box and a half of shells in a duck hunt. 10 shell limit ain't never gonna fly, though, given the stroke of the ammo and weapons manufacturers, but is a pretty good solution if you ask me. We would see more birds, fewer cripples, more high percentage shots being taken.

I like having the splits as a break. As mentioned above, more time to scout new areas.

I also like the 3 duck limit; or maybe 4 like the teal season.

10 shells wouldn't work for us that shoot coots while duck hunting.

In some areas a 25 shell limit seems to work, no way I'd do 10 though.

If it was possible I'd like to see season pushed into feb, hell, what about all the woodies that are paired up in sept?
I think there should be a opener in the last of Oct through next weekend in Nov, then a two week split. Run it for a few weeks then a two week split and run it till the last of Jan STATEWIDE.

I could also deal with a 4 duck limit.

I'm all for moving the season back a few weeks because of LA's late winter. I think everyone would agree with this.

I like the idea of three splits. Just tack the extra week to the end.
As far as limits I like the six bird limit. When you hunt by yourself and like watching dogs work 3 don't cut it.

As far as she'll limits I've heard it worked on bayou meto. But until they outlaw stupid I'm not sure how much it would help.

Post Re: LA eyes duck hunt options!
I dont like the shell limit. In La we have the opportunity to kill over 40 birds if you include ducks, geese, and coots. Not to mention galinules, and Ive even killed the occasional squirrel while hunting in timber.

In some areas I think it would be great, but in others its dumb. I also dont feel it should apply to children. New hunters hae to learn to shoot somehow also. As long as we want our sport to grow, people have to learn to shoot. It would suck to make your first hunt, shoot 10 times within the first 5 min of shooting time, then have to pack up and leave empty handed.

I do hate the sky busting, and I think that every bird that is shot at and not killed is educated, and it greatly affects our sucess rate down south, but I also feel that birds are educated from the pothole region all the way to the gulf, and I think that causes us to have to put in more effort for sucessful hunts.

I've heard of places making you save your empties. The way my maxus throws casings I'd have to save all year to pay the fines.

Of course that would also require Game Wardens to be in the field. This season hunting two WMA's didn't see a single warden.
