Post longtail engine choice
Question for the guys who have built or run a longtail motor. Is electric start worth the extra price? I am in the process of building a longtail right now and am trying to decide if I should buy the duromax 7hp with electric start $189 free shipping or the HF predator 212 $150 recoil start. My main concern is if the grease makes it hard to start when it is freezing out. It is going on a riveted jon 1230.

A motor that small I think I would just go with a pull start.. Shouldn't be hard at all to pull and don't have to worry about a battery

My 9 hp has both and I love it. When it freezes out I pull a few times to get the grease moving then use the electric start to fire it up. Works like a charm.

Thanks med.

Buzz, how much harder is it to pull when it is freezing vs. warm weather?

I think the electric start is definately worth the extra $$. I just use a small $30 lawnmower battery. I go through like 2 of them a year but I like the small size of the battery in my little 1440.

Buddy has a 12 hp lt and we pull start that without a problem in below freezing weather. (15 degrees and lower) If you can't pullstart a 7 hp somethings wrong.

Thanks for all of the replies. I think I will go with the pull start. The pull start engine has more parts available for it and if it gets too hard to start with the recoil they sell a electric starter kit for it.

Yeah
Why not just get one with both? You'll love it in the end.

The duromax comes with both but from what I have read on the kart forums is that they do not sell a lot of replacement parts or aftermarket parts for that engine. The predator has a lot of part options for replacement and upgrades, but I have only seen this with a recoil starter. If I am wrong let me know, just going off of what I read in other forums

If you are after the 212 cc Predator. Harbor Frieght has a coupon in Bass Masters and Field and Stream for $99.00. Pull start. Limit 5
