Anyone running a topper model, rivited jon? I am looking to buy a 1542 model topper, but am looking for feed back on them.

I almost bought one before converting mine but they just seem so thin. Seems like the mud motor would rip it to pieces.

It depends on what you plan to put on it and what you want to run it in. I have a Lowe jon with a thin hull, but I run mostly muddy bottoms or open water with no stumps or rocks. It works great for my uses, and I have hit some rocks that brought me to a dead stop without to much damage, no leaks yet.

I'm betting your areas look a lot like mine, and I can get anywhere I want to go with my jon boat. I don't think you will have any issues with it, it should serve you well.

Post Re: Tracker Boats
I've state this before but to repeat, my two good friends have run identical rivetted Lowe 1648 jons (.072 gauge) for at least fifteen years with 25 LT's. They have not had any transom issues running these motors and they perform very well. Another duck hunting friend has run a 35 MB Hyper shorty on a vintage SeaNymph 1652 rivetted jon, also .072 gauge for five years and only at the end of this past season did he find transom damage- he's going to get the cracks welded, and adding some plates to strengthen the transom area. I think the heavier shorties require all-welded thicker gauges for longevity, and the 1544 roughneck should be fine with a 23 shorty. Obviously, if you run a lot of stumpfields, beaver dams, thick mud, etc., the thicker gauge true mud hulls are indicated. I previously ran a 1436 rivetted jon .072 gauge with an 18 GD LT, a 1544 all-welded .090 gauge hull with a 25 GD LT, successfully, presently my .100 grizzly 1648 is still ticking after 7 years with a 27 MB LT.

i run a 23 GDSD on a 1542 Tracker. Runs 26-27 mph with mods. No issues except the boat drafts a little heavy in back due to weight of motor and me.

I have a teleflex steering from a small console to a 50 hp Merc. right now. As I mentioned in the previous post, I would like to eventualy get a GTR SD. My question is, can a used SD motor that has a tiller handle be modified for a teleflex steering?
