 Future Career
After a bunch of research and searching, I have yet to figure out what it is I want to do for the rest of my life.. I know theres already been a thread about this, but I need some new answers...
What is it that most of yall do?
Id like to find something that I like doing, and that still pays decent... the problem is, I dont really know what all is out there and theres really not much more I like to do other than hunt, fish, but for some reason, inventing or renavating things have become a bit interesting to me..
Im just looking for ideas here.. Id like to have a family a little later and be able to be home almost every night..

 Re: Future Career
I am a rig welder and make a bunch of money but I never have time to spend it. For instance I had a mud hull built two years ago and I still have not put the motor on it or painted it. I'm just gonna have to end up paying someone to finish it. I am having my first baby today as we speak and I worry I will not have time to spend with him. I work about 72 hrs a week or more and I live in a camper in south tx. Like Med said money can't buy happiness. I have traveled since I have been 19 and I am almost 25 now and I wish I would have done something different.

Let me tell y'all something, the average young adult has the option to choose many different paths in life. There is one constant in all of them.....hard work.

So....,
-You want to work M-F 8-5. -make good money -and it be a job you love
Good luck with that. I have a commercial floor covering business with my brother, but I hate it. But hey, it's a paycheck.

Not neccasarily.. yeah it'd be nice, but I dont expect that.. When I say a job I like, I mean not one I hate.. When I say I wanna be home, I mean that I dont want to be gone constantly.... Im lost dude, I cant figure it out..

What do you like doing? I don't mean hunting & fishing, but other hobbies or skills. Can you turn a wrench? Good with math? or are you more of a sales guy? Not tryin to be a dic, but this aint a decision we should be makin for you. Find something you're good at, that you relatively enjoy (or at least don't hate) & go for it.

Get you a job on a military base. That's what I did as a carpenter for years, worked 6-2, made $42 bucks an hour and loved my job for the most part. Just a thought since it sounds like your a hands on kinda guy.

 Re: Future Career
I got a degree in manufacturing engineering. Love the work I do dealing with machinery. I hated the last company I worked for though. Salary was 55k which is decent for starting out. Only problem was I did not get paid overtime and i was averaging 70-80 hours a week. Changed companies last August. I am now a travel technician. Took a pay cut to 45k salary but I get paid for overtime and I've been to various places in the USA. I only work Mon-Fri and average 55 hours a week and have almost cleared what i made at my lost employer. Im planning on retiring from here. Plus 3 weeks vacation starting out smoothed the deal as well

 Re: Future Career
Just go to college and take general studies. You will see the program you like eventually. Thats what i did and i realized that i hate fucking school. I hated it in high school and after 4 years out of school, I still hated it when i went back. After my first year of college I had a 3.2 and said fuck college. I enjoy the job I do now but I have no idea if this is the job i am gonna do for the rest of my life. Don't put to much stress on it now. Choosing a career now is like choosing a college as a freshman in highschool
and buy power ball tickets

Thanks Mason, yeah thats exactly what Im doing... I hate school with a passion, But I hate having to work my ass off for nothing worse.. I did that for 2 years out of highschool and was surrounded by people who hate their lives and have no families, in a shitty enviroment mostly all the time... FUCK DAT! I dont want nothing to do with that... I dont care how bad I hate school, its not the rest of my life...

 Re: Future Career
I went to college for finance. It's a nothing degree as are most biz degrees except accounting. There are so many degrees offered in our colleges which will get you nowhere in life. You can't get a job in general studies! I now work as a salesman in the oilfield and love it. I wish I would have taken a little different path to get here which would give me more options if this don't work out. If you decide on college I'd say go for a degree where u become something. Like an accountant, engineer, architect, nurse, or something of the sort. With those type degrees you enter a job market with a much more limited workforce thus getting more money and job security. Everyone of us idiots will a nebulous type degree end up competing for the same jobs that aren't even in our fields of study. Or get a trade and work with your hands. Welder, machinist, equipment operator... I've found those type jobs offer the same money in the long run as typical office jobs. Only difference you'll work with your hands and back instead of your head and fingers on a keyboard. Look on careerbuilder and find a something you are interested in, then go backwards and figure out what u need to do to get there

 Re: Future Career
sound like me when i got out of highschool. went to community college for maybe a month at the most. i was tryin to get into criminal justice but i hated school with a passion since the first day of 1st grade. me myself i dont mind workin one bit. i work mon-fri i dont make a whole lot of money but im a single guy i got my boat, 4 wheeler, a truck, and probably bout to buy a small house. all because i learned a trade and stuck with it. and so far its worked out. i think if you learn a trade that not everybody can do, and need on a daily basis you will be fine. but like mentioned before you gotta do what you think is best for yourself.

 Re: Future Career
You gotta have an income before the family. Most likely your future work will not be accompanied by unicorns and purple puppies. Some stuff won't go your way, ppl will piss you off and you will come to realize the world is full of ppl that work their way up the ladder on their knees. Reach and grab something and see where it takes ya.

i arrest shitbags for a living now, but prior to that i worked a couple years for the dnr as a forestry tech. if you don't know what you wanna do then go to college until you figure it out. i don't know how it is by you, but up here most employers want a bachelors degree. they don't care what it's in, just as long as you have one. it shows that you're trainable and can work at something for a few years.

 Re: Future Career
A teacher in college told us that after school most people work at least 3 jobs before they find what they will retire at. I am on my 3rd now. A college degree will definitely open doors. Doesn't make you a better employee but will get your foot in the door. Degree or not...work hard w/ a good attitude. Be dependable & trustworthy. If you find you arent cut out for the current job, get another. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. Also, from a guy that knows from experience, benefits such as good insurance is very import when looking at long-term careers. Good luck to you.

Brasso, we've talked on the phone a couple of times about the Henderson mud run. From what I heard you have excellent communication skills. So you should do very well in the field you choose to pursue.

 Re: Future Career
Get a trade if you want to make good money and you can open your own shop some day. I have may own h.v.a.c shop make well over a 100k a year And went duck hunting 72 times last fall. I would think a.c techs are in high demand down south and no matter how broke someone is they will find money to fix there ac system. When I was down south I talked to a few guys I saw around and they all were happy with the way things were. Ps. I also took a month off whent down south and bought a boat. Had a great time. I would not be able to do this if I had a regular job. The other thing is around here most of the young guys don't want to work in the trades. In 10-15 yers there will hardly be any guys doing it. That will bring the money way up.

I have a degree in hvac and when I went to get a job, they said I would get laid off during the winter when things got slow.. Just couldn't leave my permanent job for that.. I do some on the side and stuff, like when friends or family's goes out, I help them out.
