My son is convinced fast grass ain't worth the effort on a boat blind and thinks we will kill as many or more ducks with simple camo netting on the boat blind frame, instead. I disagree. He says the fast grass does not blend well in the area we hunt: henderson lake and indian bayou wma.

Fast Grass w/ Raffia Grass mixed in to break it up... Works well for me. But, your son does have a point if you can't match your surroundings then you're just sticking out.

It's has more to do with being hidden and being still I think. Before using layouts we've killed a lot of ducks on sandbars on the river with cane blinds. My dad and his friends hunted this way for years. A bright patch of green cane don't exactly blend in on a bare bar. Be where they want to be, get still, stay still, know when to shut up calling and you're on the way to having a successful hunt.

If you dont match your surroundings then you might as well be wearing an orange jump suit...I've been known to leave the boat and hunt from a muskrat hut a time or two because the boat just sticks out regaurdless how good it looks from inside the boat...lol

I disagree. See post above. I agree hunting from a boat can be tricky. That's why I don't.

I disagree aslo. Only time we hunt out of a boat is when we are on the great lakes diver hunting. I have killed lots of ducks and geese standing up in a white shirt and no hat after getting overheated. It's all about being still and no movement.

Plus some ducks are just plain dumb... That helps too

I've never really hunted out of my boat, I just get where they are, hide the boat about 300 yards away in some brush or run it up on land and cover it up, set out my Camo lawn chairs from academy, make a well hidden makeshift blind out of my surroundings, and stay still an usually never flare ducks with this method, unless of course were hunting one of the blinds, then the boat goes into the boats lip, or under it.

Scattered Cypress woods and buckbrush are the hardest places to hide a boat IMO.

The yellow fastgrass is probly the worst thing to use in these situations, although bare camo netting isn't much better. If I were you I would paint the fastgrass in dark colors like the woods around you, tie in some strips of burlap and camo netting to break it up a little and bring a big set of hedge trimmers with you to prune natural brush to cover the blind with.

You can't hide out in the wide open either, run the boat into a thicket and put the blind up in there.
I've also noticed its easier to hide from fresh ducks on a front because they aren't as farmiliar with every detail of the area and are ready to rest unlike stale ducks that have been around for a while.

I think the profile you have has more to do with concealment than anything else. Of course being still is key too but if you can reduce the size of your "footprint" the ducks will be less weary. On my lake, I am forced to hunt open water a majority of the time. I take my Momarsh Fatboy DP layout boat out there and hunt out of it. Once I experimented with hunting from the layout boat that sits about 8" above the waterline, about 50 yards from my regular duck boat(empty and completely camoed with a covering of painted ghillie bundles). I could not get anythin within 100 yards to work. I moved out about 100 yards and had a great hunt. In the woods or next to a bank or group of trees is where the camo selection is most important for your duck boat. There you have to blend with the natural surroundings while still hiding your profile. True, I also have killed a lot of ducks while not concealed or having on non camo clothing, but I was where the ducks wanted to be and unless I was doing jumping jacks, I think they would have landed there anyway.

I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've hunted out of a boat. I hate it.

i dont think that camo netting alone will do the trick. i just think it will be better to save the weight and hassel of the damn fast grass that always breaks apart. its bright yellow and doesnt fit in with where we hunt. i find myself spending an hour before the hunt collecting water lillies and throwing them on the blind to get it darker. i think it will be better to use the camo netting to hide any movement and use cypress branches for breaking up the outline of the boat. i dont have a problem showing up early and cutting brush but i know my old man doesnt want to do that. he wants something he can just put up and hunt out of without having to fool around with extra brush. so if yall have any ideas of what we could do let me know. i find that christmas tree branches work well but one of my buddies i hunt with is allergic to them so its kind of a pain in the ass.
