 Programmer/Chip for GMC Z71
I just bought a 2012 Z71 with body lift and 35's. I've never ha a chip or programmer or whatever the hell it's called in a vehicle before. Though, I'm looking to get a bit better gas mileage. Average is 10mpg right now. Not a big deal around town. But, my trips to Houston is going to kill me with time. I hate having to stop and fill up. Anyone has any experience ? Or opinions?

 Re: Programmer/Chip for GMC Z71
Yeah I think that's a suspension or your torsions and drive shaft would be hanging down if it was a body, good looking truck, throw a air filter, performance exhaust with the chip and you should see close to 20 or up if you ease on it higheay

 Re: Programmer/Chip for GMC Z71
also its definetly a suspension lift bc if it was a body lift the step bars would be lower not flush where they should be. also that looks like the bayou edition from duplesis gmc in gonzales la

 Re: Programmer/Chip for GMC Z71
Efi live, bully dog, etc.. Are all performance tuners.. Then take them to your truck shop to dial them in, mainly more effective on diesels but if you have money to blow they can help on gas burners

 Re: Programmer/Chip for GMC Z71
J save your money and change gears. i tried all the other bullshit on my truck: port polish heads, roller rockers, cold air intake, took cats out, exhaust, headers, list goes on and on. Change your gears and it will be a whole new truck. it is like taking a stock MM and stage 2 it. before i changed my gears i couldnt even power brake the 35s when i changed gears you can mash the gas and light them up

 Re: Programmer/Chip for GMC Z71
yea there is a few...
a member here used to do custom tunes.. dont know if he still does.
Jason dont go with a off the shelf tuner (bullydog, hypertech, edge)
go with custom tunes like the link i posted... they custom tune your truck using efi live or hp tuners
4.56 gears with the 6 speed would be great.
do you know what gears it has right now? if I had to guess 3.42.... hope you dont have the 3.23 gears

 Re: Programmer/Chip for GMC Z71
you can usually see a 2-3mpg gain with blackbear tunes...
gets rid of the torque management on the engine
transmission shift points ect

I don't care about the power. I can spin tires right now. I just want less gas stops.

 Re: Programmer/Chip for GMC Z71
I had the same truck as you, with 33'' tires, With the 6.0 Vortec max package.
Trust me,,,it got 14-15mpg at best before the tune, and didnt see any difference in milage after!! Milage on that truck was very sensitive to your right foot..
Drive it easy, and it wasnt to bad, you could get 15mpg's. Drive it hard, it dropped to 12mpg quick..
My wife got a denali with the 6.2 it gets almost the same, except on the hwy it goes up a lot due to the 3.23 rear end. It will go up to 18 hwy.
The tune will make it all around better, but dont do it with milage in mind!
I have a dodge now, and can tell you one flaw the chevy has, is the 4cylinder mode is WEAK! Mines would drop out on anything past 50mph,,,where is the dodge hemi holds it to almost 70mph stock...
I talked to black bear, and they can build some tunes for hte eco mode to help, but it sounds like shit and runs rough when under load in 4cylinder mode so its not recomened...
J-surely you cannot have a lifted truck and want milage to?
Only thing that will help you is a bigger tank....Sorry ole boy...
Just my experience,,no MPG Gain...

 Re: Programmer/Chip for GMC Z71
I wanted to add,,,
If you re-gear, and re-tune you can gain back some of what you lost! But you will still be running ~13mpgs at best..
Simple pal...it takes K amount of Hp to push that truck at a certain speed, and it takes Y amount of fuel to do that. k + Y = KY Needed. (Everytime you go to gas station)....lol...

 Re: Programmer/Chip for GMC Z71
gears are the best mod for oversize tires
i had 4.88 gears with 38s... i got 12-13mpg..
thats the same mileage i was getting with 3.42 gears and 33s
jason... Marcus (maxxis85) works for hurricane offroad in lake charles... they do gears and stuff

 Re: Programmer/Chip for GMC Z71
My old truck was 13mpg.
I don't care about spending the money on gas. It's just the inconvenience of having to waste time stopping on my day trips to Houston.

DiabloSport has basic tunes for power and better mileage with capabilities of custom maps updated from the internet but unlike most custom tunes this you could pull it out if ever needed for warranty nonsense. http://diablosport.com/products/predator.html

 Re: Programmer/Chip for GMC Z71
Nelsonperformance.com give them a call, they will tune a PCM to your driving situation and mail it to you. All you do is swap it with you stock one and mail it in. I used them before I found a guy around my town who did this and was very impressed. You won't be disappointed.

 Re: Programmer/Chip for GMC Z71
anytime the computer is flashed the dealer can tell
the only way for them not to know is to have a spare pcm with tunes and the stock pcm

 Re: Programmer/Chip for GMC Z71
Get a cheap car for traveling. Honestly all the tunes, exhaust, intakes, and gears wont help for what you spend money wise in which case you will only go 10-20 miles further than before to get gas. Plus most of those will void the warranty which i would assume on a new vehicle is worth not voiding.

 Re: Programmer/Chip for GMC Z71
Maybe you can contact the auto auction yard in Scott and they will tell you when all those Mexicans, come and get some cars and offer them a few dollars and they will tow that truck to Houston for you. They usually tow at least 2 vehicles behind the lead vehicle and after they get going they don't seem to stop. Just an idea. You would have to take your trips according to when they make theirs.

 Re: Programmer/Chip for GMC Z71
For the money a programmer cost, on a gas truck u can put a throttle body spacer and cold air intake for half the price and accomplish the same difference in mpg.
