What is Alabama University?

Private organization should be able to admit or reject anyone for any reason. And any business should be able to reject employment to anyone and service to anyone they choose.

However, the flip side is also true. Those not admitted or served have the right to protest if they want within the law. They can do demonstrations and advertising, get petitions and protest and all sorts of things against those private organizations and businesses.

Also, this woman that was rejected in the story has the right to start her own private organization. If she want to reject anyone that is up to her. If a black owned business does not want my money, fine, I will get someone else.

One of the businesses I use is a black owned business. If I would not use him, I would be missing out on a good man, that does the right thing. And if he did not want to do business with me, because I am white, he would be missing out also. I pay good, on time, try to be easy to deal with.

There are and never have been any blacks in my fraternity. They have their own fraternities that they don't allow us to join, just the same. Very similar to Mardi Gras organizations in Mobile. Everybody's happy until some outsider comes in and makes a big fuss about it. I don't see the problem... They have scholarship opportunities that I can't apply for, but you don't hear me crying about it.

The Chancellor of the university was pissed about what happened and said he would get to the bottom of it and that things were gonna change. It appears it was the alumnae who rejected the black applicant. I'm no fraternity guy but I didn't know alumnae were in any way involved in the applicant process other than through recommendations. Both my daughters were presidents of their Sororities at Columbia University in the City of New York (actual official name of the university). They had chapter advisors but the selection process for applicants was controlled by the students.
I'm pretty sure LSU sororities are fully integrated today. What's taken UA so long? Even that bastion of southern tradition on th hilltop, Birmingham Southern University , does not tolerate discrimination in its fraternities and sororities.

Dean, if you wanna go start a sorority at Alabama that allows everyone, go right ahead! No one is going to stop you. The university can't do a damn thing to that sorority, regardless of what they think they know though. Hell, the Greek system at Alabama controls the university anyway. Nothing will happen...

And yes, alumni ARE that involved. Who do you think foots the bill for those bad ass, mostly brand new fraternity/sorority houses on UA campus? Not the students and not the university!
