 Re: Quiting
I quit smoking by going to chew. Then it became inconvenient spitting everywhere so i stopped. Then hunting season rolled around so i needed nicotine. My advise is don't try to quit during hunting season. I start up when hunting season starts and quit again when the season closes

 Re: Quiting
I've been dipping for 20 years now. I've quit cold turkey 3 times for about 2 months at a time. Every now and then I'll smoke a cigar or few cigarettes when I drink. After quitting dipping the smoking became more of a habit. Then it's the dipping has got to be safer than smoking thing. Then you tell yourself I'll only dip after meals. IT DOESN'T WORK. You've got to give it all up. It's all will power. I guess after having no ill effects after 20 years of dipping you feel like nothing can go wrong. I'll be trying again after this can, too.

 Re: Quiting
I had a wisdom tooth pulled a couple of weeks ago and went a day and a half with out a dip. Been dippin a half to a can a day for 7+ years and it wasn't hard at all! But I went back to what I've been dippin. I know it's a mind trick but I really don't feel like I "need" it. I've been pondering about it for a little while now myself. Ive quit for a week or so a few times but just keep doing it.
Lots of chewing gum and sunflower seeds!
Sent from my beeper.

 Re: Quiting
Thanks fellas. I have tried once before but I really wasn't committed then. I can't smoke because I am allergic to all smoke, so that ain't happening. It's just those sudden cravings and a can a day don't help. Wish I woulda never took that first dip. Good luck to yall to.

 Re: Quiting
Everyone I know who has successfully quit, quit cold turkey. Using some gimick keeps you in the habit. If you want to do it, just set your mind to it and make it happen.

 Re: Quiting
Ha if you only had a clue of how long I've been waiting for that question to come up I have a surefire effortless way to stop dipping. I used Copenhagen for approximately 15 years and dropped it like a dead body of a bridge. All it takes is a ½"×18" extension and a engine exploding I had the extension go through my face and ended up with 3 steel plates and 17 screws in my face. While in lifeflight helicopter I did think " do I have a dip in?" Was afraid to feel with my tongue or finger due to my mouth was like hamburger meat. Hope you don't have to go to these measures. But I must say I've remains good and haven't started back but I've had the Michael. Good luck and be tuff, stick to it

 Re: Quiting
Quitting snuff is a tough row to hoe... Snuff has way more nicotine than cigarettes or "smoke" tobacco... I started dipping snuff way back when it was about 35 cents a can (even when I went into the Army, you could still buy a 10 can "log" of Copenhagen or Skoal for about $5), and there was not even an inkling of an idea of outlawing tobacco until you were 18 - I have quit several times over the years, but continue to fall back on the habit - the last time, about 15 years ago, my Dr. told me that my diabetes couldn't be controlled as long as I dipped snuff because the tobaccos used were sugar cured... I quit, but found myself with the mega cravings, even to the point that I started dipping coffee grounds and herbal tea's, just for the "feel" of that something between the gum and lip - then I found that Garrett Scotch snuff (the dry powder stuff) was not sugar cured - well, been there ever since...
I wish you luck, but like Puddler said, if you are really sincere about it, and have a will of steel, hunting season is the wrong time of the year to try and quit...

 Re: Quiting
You might try nicotine gum-you chew it a little to get it going, then park it between your cheek and gums. Real similar concept to dipping. Mint flavored too. I'd get the 4mg strength. If its too strong then only chew half. Cheaper that way too. Patches might help, but most people need the rush of nicotine and patches don't give you that. Chantix works really well for quitting smoking by reducing the urge to smoke/the craving for nicotine. I haven't seen any studies saying it is effective for dipping/chewing, but I don't know why it wouldn't. I'll look. I've used it. It works. Quitting is the easy part, it's the staying quit that's hard!

 Re: Quiting
I searched. Chantix is effective and safe for quitting smokeless tobacco products.

I have only dipped a few times. I have only smoked cigars a half dozen times. Did not like it. I think the best thing is to just never start.
I feel for you fellas. I know it is hard but I have watched people stop it, it can be done. Do it for your kids and spouses. And do it for your wallet.

 Re: Quiting
http://baccoff.com/I used this stuff. They have plain or some with caffeine and energy stuff in it. I bought a case of it a dipped it until I ran out (a month or so). And been off of it for about 2 years. I liked the pouches best because the texture of the regular stuff sucked. To me the actual habit of dipping was probably harder than the nicotine addiction part of it. Worked good for me, but I still crave a dip every now and then.

 Re: Quiting
Look at it from a financial standpoint....
That's how I quit smoking..
2500$ a year...
That's a new mud motor every three years FYI...
That's 2 new shotguns a year....
When I looked at it like that I had no problem quitting.
I always wondered where my mad money was going and now I know. It was literally going up in smoke.
I know a lot of people who quit chewing. Most because of their women not liking it and the rest because it was messing their gum lines up. All said it was the hardest thing they ever did. Best of luck to you friend!

Cringe @ coupe! Glad you're getting better man.
I've quit dipping 3 years ago and still crave it, but I also slip up every now and again.

 Re: Quiting
I feel your situation my man. This thread is about you quitting and that is exactly what you can do. I was hooked on either Marlboro reds or copenhagen or both for 33 years 33 muther scratching years!!!! I never once tried to quit becuase I was afraid of failing.
Here is what I did. 0500 I woke up like every morning and took a huge chomp of copenhagen. I went to the coffee pot in the kitchen and that is when it hit me. I realized it was stop right now or die with half my face cut off like a buzzard been eating it. I took that dip out and threw it away. I like me enough to give myself a good earnest try at surviving tobacco.
The first 3 days was difficult. The cravings would come and go. I used the nicotene gum when those cravings hit. Then I mixed regular gum and nicotene gum. Then I got off the nicotene gum after about a month and now I might have 3 or 4 pieces of gum throughout the day.
I thank God he gave me the strength to get through those first 3 days. If you can get there you got it whooped. Just when the cravings get bad, like yourself enough to hold out for another 5 minutes. The cravings will go away.
I support you 100%!!! I am now one of those dickheads that cant stand to be around tobacco users for that is a nasty ass habit. A habit that I picked up in early teens so I could look cool for a bunch of people that really turned out to be NOT so cool.

 Re: Quiting
Step 1. Sawallow a half of can of dip while drinking Step 2. Throw your guts up for a day. That's how I quit when I was 15. Just the smell of it makes me gag. Hope this helps

 Re: Quiting
I will agree trying to quit is a tough... Especially when everyone around you chews and yes even lots of women here dip also.. I've tried to quit didn't succeed I guess just not ready to yet.... I would definatly not even think about quitting durning hunting season. Best of luck to you... Bring a box of tooth pics or chewing gum would be my best advice...

 Re: Quiting
I smoked anywhere from 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 packs a day , had my two older kids after me for years to quit, well when my wife got pregnant with our lil girl I told them I'd quit when she was born ( only cause I felt that if I quit for me it would be too easy to fall off the wagon so I would quit for her and my older kids) smoked the last one on Dec 22 going on four years ago with no plans on lighting another ever, can't stand the smell . Best advice do it for someone else not for you.

Whoever posted to not quit during hunting season, I couldn't agree more. I tried to quit cold turkey and couldn't do it. I used these: http://www.walmart.com/ip/10324742?wmls ... 30&veh=sem and it helped a lot. Dip also got banned at work so that helped. I haven't dipped for about 2 years now.

Don't play college baseball in Alabama. The damn dugouts were full of that shit. It's part of the swagger in baseball, unfortunately.
