I've owned both and won't ever buy a motor guide again. Constantly rebuilt the foot pedals

Post Re: trolling motors
you like Gatortail or Prodrive, Mercury or Yamaha

I prefer Motorguide, others here obviously prefer the other brand- get the one that you can get the best deal on and use it till it breaks. They will all eventually break, wear out, or fail depending on where and how they are used. Ran a 36 volt hand control motorguide for 8yrs in fresh water and had no failures, have a foot control one now that is 5 years old, and just found me a used 55lb hand control 12 volt motor guide for my mud boat. nothing against MinnKota, Just had great service from Motorguide. oh yea, do you like stainless steel or plastic? I like stainless, Gatortail and Mercury

I have nothing against minn kota. Iv always had a motor guide my dad's allways had one. Never
Had an issue. Not saying minn Kota sucks. Just never had an issue with motor guide. So I never had a reason to try Minn Kota

I prefer neither but there are only two options for a 36v tm. And Minkota is the better brand of the 2 at the moment.
I could write a book on the problems my 3... Yes 3 motor guide tm have given me. Used to tournament bass fish across the southeast and had to have a backup for the backup.

Minn Kota here. Terrova or riptide are your best options. I've heard a ton of complaints from mg owners over the last several years

My dad has a minn Kota maxxum on his ranger bass boat that spends 90 percent of it's life in salt water. It is the cable steer model. It is about 14 years old with no problems at all. I bought the Minn Kota Edge for my boat. No trouble so far.

Who cares they're both owned and made by mercury, when you buy the variable speed you buying the same thing. Just a FYI, do not put a big foot on the varimax motors, it will fry the mother board everytime you use it, and will not be covered under the warranty if they find out that you used one.

MotorGuide partners with Attwood Marine, also a Brunswick and Mercury Marine subsidiary, moving manufacturing operations from Tulsa, Oklahoma to plant space within Attwood’s home office plant in Lowell, Michigan.

Minn Kota is owned by Johnson Outdoors Company

I don't believe there is a good trolling motor on the market. However, I think min kotta is the better of the 2 brands

Agree with this also...my current MK 36v hasnt given me trouble yet(YET). Out of all my MG's & MK's the MK had given me the least troubles.
