Adding just a BPS cam and exhaust
Anybody ever try adding just BPS cam and exhaust to a stock 35 motor. I was just Curious as to what the results would be.

I haven't, but I'm very interested to see what kind of gains you see.

It would be pointless to add a cam and not do headwork and carb work

Re: Adding just a BPS cam and exhaust
I know a guy who runs a BPS cam with a crossover exhaust and a mikuni. Don't know if he ever ran it without the mikuni though.

Re: Adding just a BPS cam and exhaust
I'm planning on the mikuni and head work but couldn't help wondering what if I just did the cam. I run 26 mph by myself and 22.5 with 4 guys and a regular fishing load but I hate how sluggish the boat handle with about 700 lbs of people. I see BpS sells a cam with lifters, roller rockers and push rods for $300. I'm looking at $1500 for mikuni and heads. Just wonder if the cam alone would do the job with a big load.

Re: Adding just a BPS cam and exhaust
The rockers don't come with the cam. That's a misprint. I suggest a PVT cam but that's just my opinion.

Re: Adding just a BPS cam and exhaust
Thanks for the input. My stock carb works very well. No issues with the motor. I have 204 hours on it. Seems like I'll probably give the cam a try. I'll post the results when ever I get around to doing it.
Is there any reason to go with PVT cam over the BPS?

Re: Adding just a BPS cam and exhaust
I don't run mud flats. Boat is primarily used for fishing. Occasionally run stopped up canals and water lillies. So I don't need all the torque on the bottom end. Boat doesn't have any issues plaining either. Just gotta select the right cam now. I guess I would need a grind for the medium to high range. The only time I have the heavy load like 4 people is just for cruising around

Because Al is the man!
Seriously tho, if you're looking for mid to top end power, the PVT cam is exactly what you need.

I plan on sending the heads to Jamie B. I'll talk with him some more about how much to deck the heads when the time comes.

Re: Adding just a BPS cam and exhaust
Isn't there like 3 different BPS/PVT grinds out there? The original one with the mismarked timing mark (05-07), the BPS knockoff (around the same time period) and then PVT grind.

Re: Adding just a BPS cam and exhaust
Motors are really like air pumps, the more air in, the more air out = performance.
The different cam grinds/lobe profiles define the lift (how high it raises the pushrod), duration (when and how long the valve opens), and timing (exactly when the valve opens to create the desired effect). The longer the valve is open the more air/fuel gets in and out of the cylinder.
The rockers are a lever on the valves and based on the ratio of the rocker, the valve will open a different amount given the same lift on the push rod which is determined by the cam. Stock rockers are 1:1.3 ratio, most of the roller rockers are 1:1.5 so with the same lift, the roller rocker will open the valve ~14% more. Adding rockers alone will add 'some' performance gain but not really noticeable. Adding rockers in conjunction with other performance parts compliment the
The cam and heads compliment each other on performance gains. As stated above, if you have leaking valves, adding a cam to increase performance and letting it leak out of non-seating valves will not give you a good return on your investment. If your heads are solid, adding just a cam will increase performance depending on the cam grind.
Here's a comparison of the stock cam and performance cam lobe profiles- the stock cam's sharp profile opens the valve quickly and begins to close it quickly as well.
I profiled a couple of cams purported to be different, but didn't see an appreciable difference.

Re: Adding just a BPS cam and exhaust
I spoke with Al Hodges today. He didn't recommend decking the heads. Labor charge for the head work is $250 plus $140 for the 4 stainless valves. They polish the exhaust port and put a texture on the intake side. Cam and lifters were either $225 or $250. He said the stock cam peaks around 2800rpms. His cam wakes the engine up from 3000 RPM's and up

Re: Adding just a BPS cam and exhaust
Typically you will see a solid 2mph gain from decked heads with a load on a stock engine.
I have seen this on heads with hardly any port clean up, and no intake porting with the stock intake. So that gain is coming from the fact the engine is making more torque/hp through the power band....
So to say you dont need to deck your heads is a fair statement. But for the ease and bang for buck its a no brainer on an engine with no cam.
So maybe his thinking is with the cam is not noticed? Or needed?....

Re: Adding just a BPS cam and exhaust
Yes $235 is correct on lifters and cam. I couldn't remember the exact price from the phone conversation. I just got this email phone Al.
Thank you for your inquiry. Our head work for the big-block heads includes reconture and polished exhaust, blended intake with texture finish and Manley swirl polished valves. Price is $250.00 plus parts. Manley valves....................$35.00 each PVT cam/lifter set.............$235.00 We no longer stock the shim head gaskets. Al
