 Re: Dog training
If the dog is properly trained a collar can be used or you can use the word no if the dog has good obedience and understands no the collar is not a must .Do you whip a kid for everything or do you say no . Lots of people fuck dogs up with collars and lots of people use them well but if you think a collar has to be used for everything you are mistaken .

 Re: Dog training
What do you do when your dog sits 200 yards away when you blow the whistle . Do you shock it? I hollar good dog trick is my dog understands No and good dog I promise she works 100 times harder to achieve good dog but don't misunderstand me there is a place for a collar I do use one I just don't make it my main focus but if used properly it is a good tool

 Re: Dog training
Biggest question to make clear in post number one would be this....are you teaching sit or are you correcting something else on a dog who is past the general obedience stage. I swear it's just ass-in-eyed

 Re: Dog training
Agreed on the collar. It's the best tool bar none if used correctly to get the point across and reinforce it when the point is ignored or forgotten. No idea how the old timers did it. Kinda like back in the King Buck days.

 Re: Dog training
I wouldn't say I would correct a dog FOR sitting if they're already sitting, but I do correct for a slow sit. We're talking OB here.
However, I use a four layer system in OB to minimize that type of thing. Sit with treats, sit with a pinch collar, sit with a heeling stick and then finally sit with an e-collar. Same goes with heel and here.... It's a gradual process that I do in basics. Once they've got one "layer" down, then I move into the next layer.
In transition I may nick a slow sitting dog in pile work who is already sitting, but I like to teach the skill set first then go to enforcement. Too many people rush to their e-collar when just a few extra days of teaching a skill might have avoided putting bugs in their dog.
In the field, I may use indirect pressure for a miscast, but I usually prefer to call a dog back to the point of infraction with a series of nicks as he's coming back to the point of infraction. Then re-cast.....
A lot depends on the dog's level.....if they're young in their skills, I prefer attrition.
Just my 2 cents.....

 Re: Dog training
Well if your using the ecollar to sharpen obedience training you tell the dog to sit and give him a small zip. He'll sit quicker. Its not used as punishment its used to sharpen already mastered skills. Sit come heel down load up ect ect. So yes if you using it in THAT way yes. If the dog is already sitting no, youll confuse the dog. Hell feel punished for somthing hes already doing. If you really want to make a difference in your dog force fetch. A lot of people think its only for curing mouthing birds ect ect but i think its an afvamced for of obedience and makes a huge differenve in any dogs obedience level.

 Re: Dog training
Eye contact? Depends if your talking about sit while on a retrieve or sit at heel. If its sit at heel he best have his eyes in the skys. Give more info next time jason or ima call gameover to lay the smack down on yo ass.

 Re: Dog training
There are a couple of situations with the dog at the line sitting at heel where I would give a collar correction. 1. If a multiple mark is being thrown and, after the 1st mark the dog looks off to another gun before I direct him(push/pull), he gets a verbal No with a nick then directed back to the first mark. 2. If I am lining a dog for a blind and the dog is looking everywhere but where I want it to, the dog will get a strong verbal "SIT", then If continues not to focus, another SIT command with a nick. I'm sure most all will agree that what I described is good Ole fashioned BUGGING which is what AKA described in the first place, just left a lot out. If a dog is not making eye contact at 15yds, I would think there might be some issues there. First thing that comes to mind is too much collar pressure. Just a thought.

 Re: Dog training
Yes, I have taught my dogs to understand what a nick on sit means. Taffey (see signature) runs blinds well and has lined many in hunt tests. However, every once in awhile she will suddenly feel her idea of where to go takes precedence over the literal cast given. She is focused more on what she wants to do.
Therefore, on the next whistle sit (and she always sits crisply), I will give her a bit more than just a nick. This is called indirect pressure. She knows she is sitting so it isn't because of not sitting. She has learned in that situation that she is not paying attention to what I expected her to do.
It's kind of like the old Aqua Velva commercial where the slap in the face was replied to with "Thanks I need that." This "other" use of the collar after sitting is indirect pressure and will re-focus a dog that has learned what it means.
Here's an example of indirect pressure you might relate to. Your wife tells you to go down the long drive to pickup the mail. She is expecting an important letter. You stop to carry on a conversation with your neighbor. After awhile your wife walks up behind you and gives you a good whack up side your head. Your immediately reaction is &%^ and then you suddenly realize what you were told to do.....so you go get the mail. That's indirect pressure
To repeat..dog scallops....sit literal cast dog scallops again...whistle "sit"...sweat the dog a bit (this also gives the dog time to forget what his poor intentions were)....give a collar correction (while on sit staring at you at a level the dog understands) and almost always the properly trained dog that understands indirect pressure realizes he is not doing what you asked him to.....and takes "YOUR" cast.
edit: I should add that attrition is an excellent approach to refocusing a dog. Having indirect pressure in the "tool box" makes running blinds even more effective.
