 Copperhead 12hp prop help
Just bought a 12hp copperhead and put it on a 1432 alumacraft. The refuge around where I hunt requires a prop of no more than 9". I called Hopkins in Louisiana, he said he won't sell anything for copperhead due to some lawsuit. I called copperhead, he said a 9" prop will not work on that motor, and that he does not even know where I could find one. I find it hard to believe that it won't work. A buddy of mine puts a 9" prop on his 25GTR and its sluggish, but it works.
Anybody know from experience if it'll run? And do you know where the hell I can find one?

Call Hill Marine Get a 9X9. It will run just not as fast as a bigger prop. Do they check the prop?

 Re: Copperhead 12hp prop help
In theory, I agree with you. I don't see why it wouldn't. I wouldn't have thought twice about it had the manufacturer flat out said, "it won't work." Lol! Im skeptical to drop $200 on a guess, but looks like I'm gonna have to if I wanna hunt out there.
And yes they will check. Game warden will pull up to you in an airboat that breaks every rule they have and pull out a tape measure and check your prop, motor(nothing over 25hp), and your shell bag (no more than 2 boxes of shell in possession).

 Re: Copperhead 12hp prop help
I have a 7hp kohler we just put on a 12' sneak boat and he sent it with 9x9 hill because he was waiting on new props and he is right.... It does not work! I could bury the prop and still float the valves. It's not enough prop.

 Re: Copperhead 12hp prop help
For the life of me, I can't figure out why. If you can put a 9x9 on a 25GTR, and a HEAVY 1646, why the hell can't you put it on that light little rig?

 Re: Copperhead 12hp prop help
Guess it's just that particular prop. I know the one that came on this engine had zero cup may have a lot to do with it.

 Re: Copperhead 12hp prop help
Did you try to change gearing also? I am not sure what reduction they putting in them from the factory, but you should be able to spin that 9X9 with a 1.1:1 or 1.2:1 reduction

 Re: Copperhead 12hp prop help
Changing the gear ratio is beyond my scope of mechanical knowledge. Can you PM me the run down on that?

 Re: Copperhead 12hp prop help
May be a long shot, but what if I cut an inch off either side, and rolled a lip on the end like the original?

 Re: Copperhead 12hp prop help
I recupped a badly wore down prop for a customer trying to get through a trip using a hammer and trailer ball lmao. Not the most accurate method but it actually did well. He was missing a lot of prop. My only advice would be don't start with the hill 9x9.

 Re: Copperhead 12hp prop help
Is that something I could send to you, to take it down 2", to keep the same pitch?
