The consequence of drinking beer with your son while building a pirogue. The proper construction sequence would have been to cut out the bottom sheet, then cut, fit, glue and screw the sides before putting on the bottom. Wont make much difference as the bottom and chines will be glassed with epoxy for abrasion resistance.

Feron Serrette, a cajun artisan at Vermillionville in Lafayette, I believe found the actual pirogue that was constructed in that film. It ended up in Maine with the descendants of the film maker. They donated it to the museum. He went to Maine and brought it back. It's now on display at Vermillionville.

I met some of the descendants of the fellow who built it,. They still had the maker's tools used to build it and some of those were donated, as well.

If one were to acquire the right cypress log from which to carve out a pirogue, He could get halfway through and it might crack if not fully seasoned.
I doubt a standing cypress log exists today of the diameter required to carve out a pirogue. Only an ancient sinker log would be large enough and that would cost thousands of dollars, I'm pretty sure. If someone were to danate one I'd like to give it a try with Feron's help.

BTW, I, Serrette and others are putting together a living museum of Louisiana boatbuilding in Henderson, La. The land is donated and some old vessels have already been acquired, including a lugger.

over her in our part of the river up the river from where I like they have some cypress trees that are huge. I bet the are 18 foot in circumference. meaning if I were to measure around the tree from start and back to that point it would be around 17 to 18 ft.

What are the advantages/disadvantages to glassing just the outside as opposed to full glass? I might be interested in building one.. Looks good!

My son and I have to keep remimding ourselves that this is not going to be a museum piece so we've let some imperfections slide in the final prep of the hull for painting. Most will not notice them at all but we know what they are.

If it's not too much trouble Dean would you mind doing a simple write up on how you built it? Doesn't need to be very detailed just enough to cover the basics. I've been needing one for hunting and getting ducks out of some of our deep water timber holes we have around here. And I would much rather build one just because I like doing those kinds of projects instead of buying one.

1. design: this is a two man pirogue 15.5 feet in length and 3 foot beam.
2. Construction method: skin on frame with longitudinal at chimes and gunnels.
3. Materials: 16' 3/8 inch marine ply, 3 x 1 inch cypress frames, 3 x 3 inch cypress stems. 1" , 1 1/4" and 2 " stainless screws, 6 0z fiberglass cloth? 1 gallon west epoxy, 1 quart Pettit duck boat brown paint, 3m 5200 sealant
4. Longitudinals: mahogany
