 23 head work
I currently have my motor tore down to replace head gaskets so while I have it down i want to have the heads worked on them but I'm not sure what all I should do to them. I have a makuni on the way and also a mac. The rest is stock. I will eventually add a cam but it will be a while. I have saw where most deck them at .035 and also do a 3 angle valve job. Should I shim the valves springs and get new valve also ? Any suggestions

Deck to your liking, clean up the ports, 3 angle valve job with stainless valves. Shim springs for higher rpm you will be turning

 Re: 23 head work
I would search this forum for people who have decked the heads on this motor in the past. I have no idea what the stock piston to valvle clearances are, but you don't want to over do it and have problems later. YOu may also want to take into account what cam you are going to get later on. It may somewhat dictate how much decking you can do, depending on lift.
I am by no means an expert, but do you due diligence in finding out what your clearances are and will be before and after decking the heads.

 Re: 23 head work
I'm in the same boat as you just took heads off and was trying to figure out what would work best. Looks like .030-.040 is common around from what I've researched. I'm doing that with oversized valves and having the valves shimmed and port work on the heads.

 Re: 23 head work
.035 decked heads with cam should put you at around 160-165 compression. IMO oversized valves offer no real advantage over stock size. light port and polish work softening hard angles and casting marks in the CC and ss valves with a 3 angle valve job is all that is needed

On the 23 I built up, heads decked .030 it had right at 170 psi compression

 Re: 23 head work
I thought the only way to get stainless valves was with the oversized? Makes sense if you have a bigger carb and exhaust to go with oversized valves IMO.

 Re: 23 head work
Velocity is what's important. That's why it's also a horrible idea to hog out the ports on these engines. Smaller diameter and higher velocity is going to serve you much better in this application.
Valves can be made however you want. Actually seen a smaller valve used before...

 Re: 23 head work
My buddy had his 23 decked .040, cleaned up the ports and the intake, and swapped to the stainless valves (not oversized) to compliment a mikuni and gutted stock. Seems to be a good recipe for his motor. He has a cam we are gonna install within a couple weeks.
