 Quiteing a mudmotor?
There's been some talk out of the AGFC that their either going to ban mudmotors on wma's or make a noise level. Anything over you get a ticket. Have any of you tried to reduce the sound of your motors?

With the huge flywheel fan.. good luck. Air cooled engines are loud.

There's been talk here before about piping it into the water, seen it done on here at least once.

 Re: Quiteing a mudmotor?
BPS is coming out with a considerably more quiet muffler this year. Not sure on decibel readings, I haven't got an answer to compare it to something like the Q yet. I had a longtail 25 kohler that was pipped into the water via. a flex pipe and it was very quiet compared to not having it.
Noise isn't a factor here............yet. There's a group of fools here that are trying to outlaw bright led lights on duck boats now? Fuckin stupid people.......

 Re: Quiteing a mudmotor?
The engine itself is noisy, but so is the exhaust. I ran a flexible exhaust tube from my muffler down to the water this year, mainly to try to save my ears. It's in the water at idle and just above the waterline on plane. I measured a 15 decibel drop at idle from where I stand to drive with the exhaust piped to the water. Can't really measure it while on plane but had two different folks I didnt know at the ramp mention how quiet it was riding behind me on the way back in.
Disclaimer I did drill several 1/4" holes in the tube to prevent water being sucked up the tube when I turn the motor off

Does the extended pipe hurt performance? Thinking about doing it to my long tail just attaching the flex pipe to the fram

 Re: Quiteing a mudmotor?
If they were gonna ban mud motors for noise, airboats would have been banned years ago. But then them id10t fool liberals got them banned on Caddo Lake.
BTW those high performance v-drives with v-8s and modified outboards make just as much noise as a mud boat.

 Re: Quiteing a mudmotor?
I know for a fact that the head of AGFC hates them. He has been in talks about banning them on public ground. I think there's more to it than noise. To me a lot of it is jealousy that they can't get to places a mud boat can. Regardless if making my motor quieter will allow me to continue to run it , I'm down.

So they don't run one? TPWD sure does, they will drive right in where you hunt and check you!

 Re: Quiteing a mudmotor?
No running a mudmotor takes way too much effort for an agfc warden to run. They just launch and drive up to the first bend and write tickets for leaving early and racing.

 Re: Quiteing a mudmotor?
Back in the sixties, we used a product called a Snuf-Or-Not that was installed in our Harleys straight pipes to calm them down when running in town. Looked like a washer with a spring and a knob installed just inside of the end of pipe. Could be turned like a flapper valve. Quieted the noise quit a bit, but also hurt performance when closed. Probably could be used on a mud motor pipe, with same results.

 Re: Quiteing a mudmotor?
I used some electrical conduit that was the right size, drilled a couple of small holes above water line to prevent sucking water... never measured the noise but it is a lot quieter to drive. 27 PD. Did not notice any performance difference.

 Re: Quiteing a mudmotor?
LOL Another crew had launched their jet boat from a different location during the flood and their truck and trailer ended up on an island.. So we rescued their trailer so they could load up the boat. Truck had to stay were it was for a few days....

 Re: Quiteing a mudmotor?
Wisconsin has some messed up laws also.
The 86 dba level is one, along with the no other lights (including docking lights) may be used which can be mistaken or interfere with navigation lights. Although these laws are seldom enforced, piss off the possum cops and they will throw them on the table also.

I don't think they will be able to ban mud motors here because there's too many people that will protest it

Like 20 some odd years ago. They let the guys come out and spray invasive species with them, but they're the only ones allowed to run em.

I don't go out there often but I do recall seeing a "fleet" of them several months ago. I believe they were swamp tour boats. I assume they have special privileges.

 Re: Quiteing a mudmotor?
It was in the mid 80's. they were alot of fun and alot of them on caddo. Even had airboat tours run from curleys when curleys was an awsome spot on the lake. It was said that the "pop" from the prop ran off endangered species. Then they were gone

 Re: Quiteing a mudmotor?
This is also a reason why we organize a ride once a year and raise money to donate back to the lake. They know at least some of us care about the place and most of the people that actually matter really appreciate what we do. I believe we are somewhere in the 20k range in total donations so far since I've started helping with it. Locals I've talked to seem to appreciate it quite a bit. Hopefully they have our backs when it matters most.

 Re: Quiteing a mudmotor?
Yeah you can get an Airboat ride out of Jefferson. Its a big rig , loud, noisy, and fast, but my Seaark will blow their doors off!!!
They come by house on the river, and you can hear them coming 15 minutes before they pass.

 Re: Quiteing a mudmotor?
Do we have current working list of aftermarket exhaust manf. by chance? Obviously I'm aware that BPS, Voodoo, SW are a few, but I think some of the others may no longer sell exhaust like MAC, MarshMellow etc. (I may be wrong tho.).
