Excel F4 foam floor & drain plugs
Hey guys,
Having problems gettin a 1754 up on plane. 35hp BT longtail stock motor. Thinking back a few years I had left the drain plug in from the end of the season til the next, literally hundreds of gallons of rainwater in the hull. Aside from stripping the blind and motor and driving down to the local scale I really have no way to tell if the foam is holding water or how much.
I need some advice. Should I assume this hull is water logged? If so what are my options. Also, Wtf is the little orange plastic plug next to the drain plug?
Thanks, John

A tach and leakdown id start to see if it's an engine issue assuming spark and prop are good. Fair chance waterlogged foam is making a big difference too

Fill the hull up with water in the shallows and see if it floats. If not you foam is saturated. Keep a tow strap hooked up to the bow eye and drag it up the bank to drain after checking.

Water logged floatation foam will "weep" water for days, tilt boat and trailer up (way up), leave for a day or two, if its still got water dripping out of drain plug its waterlogged.

Re: Excel F4 foam floor & drain plugs
50: I am surrounded by salt water, I don’t know I feel that’s a solid solution but thanks.
Cypress: I am going to do that, not a bad idea.
I popped a plug out of the floor and I am 90% certain it’s water logged. The boat sat full of rain water for 9months and who knows how many times it froze and thawed from Jan til March. I will run it across a scale before I cut the floor.
Any idea what the second drain plug in the hunt deck is, plastic orange plug?

Re: Excel F4 foam floor & drain plugs
I just finished up takin all the foam out of my hunt deck on my F4. Pry had 80-100 lbs of water and wet foam in there. I drilled two 6 inch holes on the top of the deck with a hole saw and got the t-h marine covers and rtv’ed the hell out of em. Pry also have to drill new drains on each side for the boat cuz water won’t drain worth a crap over the stringers. If you open it up you’ll see what I mean.

Re: Excel F4 foam floor & drain plugs
based on what you said with the hull sitting full of water, id say you have an extra 300lbs of weight in the boat. water is 7lbs per gallon plus the weight of the foam. all mud motors push better in shallow water when there is a little "pushback" on the prop from the water not being able to go anywhere. Deep water allows water around the prop to be pushed out and not trough the prop. that's why there is a noticeable bump in speed when you go from deep water to 1' of water.
regarding the bogging under a load, that's not normal. I'm not mechanically inclined but some of the guys in here can definitely help you in that.
