Post Advice/help
I have a question for the group and need some advice.
I'm 72 and last year bought a mud boat 14x48 Jon 6.5 Predator with stage one(longtail)
I get hung up on the sand bars where the water is 4-6" deep,I'm thinking of going to a surface drive,Twister or something on that order.
Would this be any better or still have the same problem?
Thank you

Twister kits are garbage. Put gator glide on your hull and look for some More HP. I'd either go with an 18hp copperhead surface drive or do a swamp runner kit with the 420cc predator and stage 1 mods. 6.5hp and stage one is really only 8-9hp and isn't going to push through anything.

Like stated, Add Gator Glide,
and get a Copperhead to keep it light.
anything from 10hp-23hp will be good for that boat.

I'd like to thank the 2 members that replied to my post for help/advice.
MudMotors has a kit that I can change my longTail to a surface drive.
I value your opions. And if I was rich I'd purchase a MudBuddy or Go Devil.
Thanks again in-advance

^ no joke. I bought a kit for a 6.5ho longtail, then the 420cc longtail, then put stage one upgrades, then a 35hp surface drive and now stage 3 mods on that surface drive. Each time I bought the kit (at a new cost) and motor, I realized I could have gotten a used one Of the major manufacturers that carry their individual reputations.

Just know what the limitations of your motor are. A long tail under 25hp is really just a shallow water motor. You will get through weeds with it but you aren't pushing mud and certainly not sand. Same goes for a surface drive under 18hp.

There are a few pages on Facebook that have all sorts of used mud motors. You may want to take a look on there for some inventory and pricing options.

I've seen no less than four 16hp or higher longtails for sale on this forum for less than $1500 since January. One went for 800 or less (his asking was 800, but may have sold it for less). The "if I was rich I'd get a ______" just makes some of us laugh. I got my 35hp surface drive for 3500, and could've had it back stock for another 500 or less if I found some good used parts. That's less than half what it would cost new. The same types of deals exist for smaller hp motors. With a little patience and diligence, you can find something that will hold up and serve you better than those kits. That being said, budget, expectations, and need drive what you should get. Gator glide will help with those sandbars, but 6.5 hp isn't really enough at that depth on that boat.

From what everyone been telling me is just get a bigger motor,so I'm looking at a 13-22hp motor and then put frog spit or gator glide on the bottom. Better?

Good idea there with a wider boat..but sand is going to stop you on most rivers, as the GDSD Boats or mostly any jon will stick to it. A more powerful motor will just have you going faster and if and when you hit that sand bar you will need a wench to get you off with some PVC pipes to roll you off.

Better light bar will keep you off those sand spits.
