Post Advice on new boat.
I've got a BW 23hp LT swomp motor. I'm looking into getting a new boat. Looking at the GD duck hunting boat with round chine1644. I was told that I may want to look into the GD surface drive boat with the square chine because it's easier to turn at slower speeds as a rounded chine will slide at lower speeds. Not sure what to do or what size boat to get. Any suggestions and or reasons why I should get a certain boat?

Don't know who told you that.
Round chine boats are made for better turning than square chine boats.
With a 23 longtail, you wont be going fast enough to worry about sliding in turns.

That 1644 with the round chine will pair up nicely with that SWOMP Lite.

I'd go with the 1844.

I’d go with the 1844 as well. If you get the 16 it won’t be long til you want a bigger boat.

I have owned all three GD hull - 1644 round / 1648 tapered / 1844 round

1648 --- fastest with 2 man load or less
1644 --- slowest loaded light or heavy
1844 --- best with 2 or 3 man loads

Also if you go to a SD the 1844 performs better with SD than the others....

I am running the 1844 with 35 GDSD currently and prefer that combo to LT as I mostly
2 and 3 man hunt now....

However for years prefered the 1648 with 23 GDLT for solo hunting....

1644 was my least favorite with either LT or SD....

I went ahead and ordered the 1644 round chine. I wanted the 18ft but the 1644 is all I could afford as of right now. Coco did tell me that the tapered chine surface drive boat might be a better choice but the 1644 round will most definitely work to suit my hunting needs. Maybe in a few years I can upgrade to a bigger boat. Thanks for the advice tho guys.

Post Re: Advice on new boat.
I went with the smaller round chine boat because it's a little lighter that the 18ft. I looked really hard at the 18ft boat. But I'm wanting to keep the weight down due to the fact I have a small 4cylinder pickup. Also it was a cheaper boat. I am on a budget. And wanted to get the best I could afford to get at this time. Yes I may want a bigger boat later on, and yes the 1644 may not have the best speeds or performance but I got what I could afford and it will do fine until I need/ want a bigger boat and get a bigger pickup. Again thank you all for your input I will use all the advice you guys have given on my next boat.

And next year another 1644 will be for sale...

FYI - Weight and price on 1644 and 1648 are identical...

1644 - It is the most resold model they make....

Because with a 200 lb solo operator and decoys he will be lucky to break 16 mph with 23LT
(conditions where the 1648 would do 19 mph)

Because with 2 man hunting load he will be lucky to break 12 mph because it wont plane with 23LT
(conditions where the 1648 would do 16 mph)

Dont listen to the guy who builds them....

Or anyone else who has actually owned and used all three....

not the same price and they are not the same weight either. More material = more weight.. Check the website and you'll see.. but anyways thanks again.

Both have floatation - both are press molded out of exactly the same
size, weight, grade of aluminum in different press molds - both have
same transom, beam width, seats, side crimps, and front bow profile
with front floatation and side floatation pods....

However the 1644 was designed when LT motors had far less power
and it was never designed to plane water at all - but to press thru
stumps and debris and slide off cypress knees at very lo speed...

It is very good at going very slow...

The 1648 is good at sliding thru as well and has a hull designed to plane too
and will get the most performance out of your 23LT...

You will regret not spending the extra $100 for the 1648 - call and switch your order
or better yet test drive both and decide yourself before you buy....

I've got a Swomp 23 to go on a 1540. Really need to get around to mounting it and doing some trial runs. Hull is a 0.100 F&F welded hull.

Alright apparently the 1648 SD boat is going to have pods on the inside of the boat in the back where the driver would stand. I was under the impression it will be an open floor in the back according to the cadd drawning on their website. The boats don't start getting pods until they go wider such as 1656 according to the website. I called the dealer I'm getting it from and he told me my boat will have the pods in the back, and that go devil used to have just a small bench style pod in the back under the motor but they have changed. I'm kinda pissed because I was under the impression it would be open per the cadd drawing and not have the pods! calling coco in the morning to see what's up with this and to make sure of what I will be getting.

That's the picture that's online that godevil has on their website. And that is what i was expecting to get. But the dealer I'm using told me it will have pods like the 1656 or whatever. Check out greggorrmarine in Texarkana Tx and look at his 1648. He says his 1648 boats always have the pods..

Not driving 10hrs to test drive a damn boat. Was just curious to see if anyone knows something I don't about the configuration of the floatations pods on the boat? And why godevil had a pic of an open floor in the rear and a godevil dealer is saying all of his boats have a different setup? Can you get them in either configuration?

Yes both configurations. A Marine sales place wants you to buy what is in his stock so he can get stock turnover.
BTW go 18x48 not enough weight difference, and in the long run will haul more and get on plane easier. And keep boat covered and plug removed when storing and flotation will not water log!!!

Well fellas I got the boat a few days ago and it is what I expected. The boat drives and handles very good with my motor. With just me the boat will do 19 with another person and hunting load was 16. Very pleased with the boat, thanks again for all the input and suggestions.
