Post GTR 40 XD Review
Ran my new GTR 40 XD this weekend for the first time. I liked it a lot but wanted to do a review because you hear people exaggerating about it's performance.

First off, the motor is on an 18x48 crawfish skiff that is decked out. Two storages in the front, built in gas tank, hydroturf, etc. I also have 5 coats of gator base and 5 coats of gatorglide on the boat.

I ran it first stock out of lake long. The best speeds I was able to hold was 32 in shallow water and 33 in the intracoastal. That was at 4600rpms with the stock powertech prop.

I ran the boat today with the voodoo, k and n air filter, and a worked 12 pitch merc prop. I ran the boat with my dad, 3 ice chests, fishing poles, tackle boxes, a case of beer, and some other stuff, and ran 31 at 4600 rpms.

Final thoughts. For something I am not modding further, I am super happy with its performance and power. The noticeable difference between the 40 and 37 is not speed but torque. It feels completely different than a 37 in the torque area. Definitely a lot more.

Hope this helps anyone looking at getting one, and if anyone has one, let me know what prop you are running and what speeds you are getting with it, because I'm playing around with different ones currently and would like other opinions.

Good information here!

I completely agree on the speed vs torque comparing the 37 and 40. My 40 is faster than my 37 was but I can really tell a difference in holeshot.

Absolutely bro. I think the main difference in speed for me is going to be adding more pitch to my merc prop. I had mine worked to a 12 pitch, but I can spin it 4700 at 31 mph. I think if I get it pitched to 13 or 13 1/2, I'll be able to attain the mid 30s easy. We will see, and I'll keep everybody updated on what prop I find works best on my rig so other people can not spend as much time as I have figuring out the exact right setup lol

I also bought the new 40. I have not been able to run it yet  still waiting for my hull to get done being built. But I’m putting it on a 1653 havoc mst. What kind of speed do y’all assume i will be getting out of that?

Did testing after the exhaust and intake was put on the motor today with 4 different props. The results were as flollowing.
Gatortail 3 blade 10.5 pitch worked - 30.5mph at 4500 rpms
Gatortail 2 blade 11 pitch worked - 32mph at 4500-4600 rpms
Powertech 3 blade 11 pitch unworked (comes with the 40 GTR) - 32 at 4500-4600 rpms
Merc 3 blade 12 pitch worked - 35mph at 4600-4700 rpms

What I concluded from this is that if you want optimal performance from a 40 GTR, you need to have at least an 11 1/2 or 12 pitch, if you are running it stock or with just a few bolt ons.

All the speeds I acquired were by myself in the boat with no load. Holeshot in the 3 blades were garbage. The two blade surpassed them by miles in holeshot. Looking to get a worked big blade or hammer to try on the set up and see what it produces.

So if I’m looking to get more speed without mods yet , i will put a aftermarket muffler on it but that’s it ( what do you suggest for that as well) what prop would you suggest? Mainly will be in deep water , occasionally i will be in shallow water ,stumps and mud.

There are a few exhausts out there man. The one is run is a voodoo that I have baffled. It's not excessively loud in the low rpms but is pretty pound at wot. It's a good exhaust, well made, and durable. I got mine ceracoated and love the look. It prevents the rest from developing as well. Another good exhaust is the stainless works. It's not as loud as the voodoo but has pretty much the same gains. Marshmellow makes a good exhaust as well and they sound good, but I've only seen them in passing. Other than that you have the macs (loud AF) but it is next to impossible to get in touch with the guy who makes them.

Other than that, get you a K&N high flow filter. It won't give you anymore speed but I find you will run a little cleaner and smoother at WOT.

Other than that, get your prop worked after you get some numbers stock at optimal rpms. Baggy in Houma does the best prop work in the industry IMO.

Yeah those were my 2 options exhaust wise. Just didn’t want anything extremely loud. I will definitely check out the k&n! And how do i get in touch with baggy? I appreciate all the help man!

985-868-0103 is baggys number bro. Tell him William chauvin from The police department referred you.

The part number for that filter is E-4665 too bro

Also, buy that filter through an auto parts store because it's only like 45 bucks. If you order it through backwater, it's almost double the price.

You can get the filter from Amazon for $40 with free shipping with prime. Most parts store will have to order from their warehouse anyway.

That's true, I had trouble finding it on amazon at the time, so I went to Oreillys, but I agree, if you can get it on amazon, that is always the easiest and cheapest.

Great post. Looking to order late summer.
Stupid question. When you talk about torque with this motor,
What are you referring too?

Torque is twisting force that causes rotation. Torque is what allows you to pull or push. The torque in relation to this topic is the force that allows you to chop through the vegetation, eat through the mud, or carry a large load in your boat. Torque is good and you want a motor with a lot of torque for the reasons explained above.

Now, tiller torque is not something positive, but it is something that really can't be avoided except by changing your prop or moving the load around he boat and displacing the weight differently in your rig. I find that tiller torque is a lot less in a 2 blade prop than in a 3 blade prop. Once you use both props on your boat you will see what I'm talking about bro.

Ran the gatortail fat blade over the weekend on my rig. Unworked it pushed the boat 30 at 4500 rpms. That run was unloaded. I put my dad in the boat and a load and still went 30 at 4500. Once baggy works it, I'm going let let y'all know what I'm running. It carries a load well and vegetation can't stop it. It's a massive prop. I'm very curious to see what it does once it's worked.

Doing a post as a follow up for everyone on more discoveries. I'm starting the break the motor in now and have a total of 9 hours. I have done my full service on it at 4 hours and am running 10w30 synthetic royal purple. I took the boat out for the gatortail redfish tournament. I was running my 12 pitch merc prop. I had 3 people in the boat, two ice chests, each about 100 lbs, fishing poles, push poles, paddles, etc. I was able to hold 32.5 mph and bumped 33 a few times with the large load. The optimal rpms with the 12 pitch merc prop with that load was 4250. I put a cut skeg on the lower unit yesterday and have yet to run it with the cut skeg. Once I get my fat blade worked, I will follow up with numbers on it as well.

William,,,that GTR fat blade will be the slowest prop you put on that boat....Been there done that. With that said, it make the motor feel as if it can step your boat while pulling and elephant. It cannot be beat in load carrying and out the hole performance.

But the downside is its slow as shit...Even worked.

After getting the fat blade worked (brought to a 10 pitch, took .25 inches off of each blade, added heavy cupping, sharpened the blades, and did a high gloss polish), I was about to run 31.5 empty, 31.5 with my dad and a small load (both in shallow water), and 34 in deep water. I'm happy with its performance man. That's fast enough for me. Holeshot is the best I've seen. It will easily throw you out the boat if you arnt careful and holding onto that handle lol

I may have missed it earlier in this thread, but has anyone run a stock hammer on a 40 yet? I'd imagine that's a solid stock prop for that engine and I'm curious as to the numbers it produces.

Put my straight skeg back on yesterday and took the baffle out of my voodoo and had a tip made to divert the sound behind the boat. It increased the rpms by 300 and with two people, a fishing load, I was able to run 34.1 and hold that speed. That was running with my 12 pitch merc prop. I got close to bumping 35. Was very very happy with those numbers. Believe it or not, the voodoo was not that loud without the baffle. It sounded just like a Harley Davidson actually lol

He straight skeg is the one that comes with the motor, the cut skeg has a notch cut out the top right behind the prop. For my boat and my props, I found the cut skeg did not perform as well as the stock one

From what all I’ve been reading, if I’m right, when I go to purchase my 40 ask for the 2 blade big blade and send it off to baggy to get worked (main prop during hunting season). Then for a “speed” blade grab a worked merc 3 blade for those long river runs with beer in the boat. Seems like the most cost effective route considering you get a prop when you purchase the motor anyways

That's exactly what I did bro and I'm happy with that decision. Also, don't buy a "worked" merc prop because they are wayyyyy too expensive and it's better to run it stock on your particular rig prior to getting it worked so that baggy can dial it in just right for you and your rig
