Post Any 40's out there??
In the process of building/buying my first duck boat and am currently in talks with prodigy and timber creek boats. Wanting to know if anyone has ran any of the new 40's out there ( mb, pd and gtr)? Build will most likely be 18x54 with v rake and nothing else too crazy except during season will have shaggy blind attached, 60 lb dog, me 195 lbs. And max two other people. Any help is appreciated and sorry if I'm beating a dead horse here.

Or the post on GD 40 RNT...

SEARCH will turn up more....

Bottom line - early models had valve issues - Briggs has made some changes
and it remains to be seen if those changes will get you more than 50-100 hrs
before valve problems...

New it runs like a smooth quiet motor with the feel of 50hp when up over 3000
but only minimal extra holeshot or low rpm torque...

I was very impressed with a new one with under 10 hours....

We shall see. I like mine so far, and hey, if I have valve issues, I'll send my rig to nick willey and get him to stage it up. It will make a perfect excuse for me to hop it up anyway lol

thanks guys I will check it out. saw that the 40 hdr comes with the 3 blade raptor prop so thats gotta be a little better for not having to buy a worked blade right off the bat?

Briggs just did the same thing we have been doing.. More compression, larger camshaft, and a better exhaust. For a guy wanting a stock motor, its great. A fully built 40 is the same as a Fully built 37.

just spoke to the guys at prodigy to move this thing forward and one guy stated hes pushing 300 lbs. on an empty boat with the 40 hdr running 29 pushing 30. also said will turn a hammer without any issue if I chose to remove the raptor 3 blade (which I plan on having both for any change in environment I may encounter hunting as I travel around). and they are expecting in the next couple months to receive new hdr 50 efi to basically replace the 4400 bd.

He is a performance motor builder out of Texas. He is one of the best in the business according to a couple of my buddy's who have built motors by him. A guy out of bourg right now is running low 50s in a stage 5 37, and this I have seen in person. Would love to get a motor built one day by him.

Whatever you do with your props, send them to baggy in Houma after you run the boat with and without a load and he will get you much more performance out of your prop

I ordered a Stumpjumper with a 40 Gatortail. Should get it middle of July. My Boat should be on the heavy side. Extra Thick hull, cat Walk, storeage hatch, Fish deck, Spud Poles, 2 extra fishing chairs, Live Well, and lights on front. It is a 18X54 with 21" sides. For what I am spending it better last a lot longer than 40hrs.

If you take care of it and do your services on it and all, you shouldn't have any issues. Any motor can have issues and when new stuff comes out, people are always going to be hesitant and wary. I knew what I wanted and did my research, bought my motor, added my few extras to it, tried some extra props, and currently have 11 hours on it and I love it. I run with my buddies who have staged up motors and keep up with them all day. You will enjoy your rig bro

Why too soon? They make money because they mod from the manufacturer. They'll sell. They slap their tune, an aftermarket exhaust, and whatever else, and you've got a mildly modded 40 pushing around 50. Makes sense to me.

So what's a rough guesstimate on turnaround time with baggy? I see alot of mentions of him on here so it's safe to say he's "the prop guy"and I'm sure swamped with work.

I have two props for my gatortail and two for my go devil. All have been worked by baggy. My dad is a commercial fisherman and has done business with baggy for over 30 years. Baggy is the best out there, which is why delta uses him as well as nick willey

Both are 9x6. Had a half inch of pitch added to one, had it polished, sharpened, and cupped more, resulted in bringing it up 1.5 - 2 mph at WOT depending on water depths. The other had the same work done but no pitch added and it gained 1 mph. The props I had worked for the GD are pushing props (everyone knows this), so speed was not the goal in the work but more efficiency in pushing my little 1440 with my dad and lab with me. The result of the work made a big difference in holeshot and helped me only lose 1 mph with my dad and pup in the boat as opposed to just me in the boat.

So this motor came with the stock big blade and not the raptor. If I were to send it to get worked what would be a good pitch? What does the stocker sit at?

Post Re: Any 40's out there??
Baggy worked my GTR fat blade last week to a 10 pitch. That would probably be perfect for you as well since you don't have any other internal mods bro.

As for the 40, people are correct when they say it's a slightly modded 37 in some ways. The heads have been redesigned as has the cam and there is a different exhaust (it looks exactly the same as any other stock exhaust to me), but where the 40 really differs from the other 993cc motors is that the lower portion of the block has been redesigned to strengthen it and help prevent some of the cracked blocks seen in modded motors in the past and there is a completely new forged piston design for more gains at the top end. I spoke to two of the engineers a couple of weeks back at the gatortail redfish tournament in dularge, and they had a few of the 40s there completely apart. What they told us there was that the 40 is the equivalent of a stage 2, 37. Considering I can run 35 empty and 32 with 3 people and an ice chest of crabs and drinks in my crawfish skiff, I tend to believe what them boys were saying about the performance. In any event, I'm happy with it so far and I hope whoever else gets one is happy with it (or any other mud motor for that matter).

Also, the guys at vanguard said that they are moving all production from japan to Alabama by the end of this year and that vanguard will be an American made product, which I'm happy about. God bless America! :)

Hey wchauvin got my 40 mounted on my havoc and have been running her. Got about 8 hours on it now. With just me all she has is 32mph
Got 3 other buddies in there with me - all around 200 pounds and it pushed us 4 consistent 28-29 mph. All stock still
Trying to decide what to do next to get more speed

The voodoo isn't loud at all if you get it baffled. I have mine baffled and my old man and wife don't complain at all. If anyone is near Houma Louisiana and would like to come hear it run before you get one, pm me and we can go for a ride.

Only performance stuff I got on my boat is the voodoo, a k&n air filter, worked prop, and a cut skeg for the lower unit. If you end up getting a cut skeg, get it first and then get your prop worked after, because your numbers will be different because you are getting much more water to the prop. When I installed mine I did not see a difference in top end but saw major improvement in holeshot.

Get with me on your prop via PM and I can tel you everything I had baggy do to mine bro

I had a baffled voodoo. It was a headache. I've got a new BPS Q on order now. The minute difference in performance is not worth the noise to me.
