I just got a mud buddy 35 that’s on a 23 frame for my 16x38 Gator Trax rouge. I took it out today on the river and topped out with 2 people and 6gal of gas I was only getting up to 21mph. The guy I bought it from had a boat about the same size and was getting a lot more speed. Any ideas?

Is it the right transom height for your boat, prop condition, rpms, etc etc. Most importantly, did you verify those speeds in his boat or just going off what he told you?

I was able to confirm the speed of the other boat. This new mudbuddy is a lot harder to turn than my prodrive so I was wondering if I needed to lower the motor mount a little bit

I haven’t run mud buddies that much but I feel like the motor isn’t low enough to get good water which is causing it to top out at 20. Had a longtail pass me today which was pretty embarrassing

Transom height looks to be an issue. What about gearing? And what prop is on it?

Also, I'd want the engine bolted to more than that. 2 bolts holding it on? Putting a lot of stress on that case cover and crank bearing in the cover. Or is that a thin piece of plate going to the front bolts?

It’s got a 50 tooth sprocket on the bottom and a 38 on the top. And it’s a brand new big blade prop. And it’s got 4 bolts holding it on and I got my buddy that builds boats to weld some reinforcement in there so it won’t be going anywhere. Can’t really see it in the pictures though.

Put good eyes on the bottom of boat too. Does it have any arch or hooks? 38 wide is probably running deep in the back and dragging u down. Try getting as light as possible and see if it will "step". Make sure the governer is turned up too

I will try that next. I just ordered a tach to put on the motor to help me get a better idea of whats going on. I feel like its getting on step and then its just not getting any faster than that. And it doesnt have any hooks or anything in the bottom. Its a 2014 and was only ran in soft marshes until i got it.

Here’s a better view of my mount. This is why I’m having trouble figuring out how high or low to mount it. My transom is 16in and the belt case is 30in on the motor. I’ve got no clue where to start to adjust it

If that is a long transom motor, you transom height needs to be 21 inches. That may be your issue

It's not a tall. Go look at the picture a few posts up.

It looks short but I would rather ask first instead of assuming. Assuming has cost me money and grief in the past lol

I just got my tach on and my motor is idling around 1800 which I’m not sure if that’s high or not. And then wide open on the trailer it’s getting to 2600rpm. I think it’s because it has a green spring while most stock 35s have a purple spring pulling the throttle. What do y’all think?

No. Your idle should be around 1150, and max RPMs should be 4700 if you have CDI or 4200 (I think) if non CDI.

If that’s all you’re getting you’ve got some issues and the spring is not the issue.

Double check the wraps though on your tach. Those are crazy low RPMs for max and you should easily be able to hear if that’s all you’re getting.

If those are in fact all you’re getting then it’s time to start walking through diagnoses. First I’d disconnect throttle cable and manually move your throttle slide to make sure your engine will spin all 4700. If not, then it’s an engine issue and work from there.
