Rebuild or Buy new
I have a 2012 36hp prodrive with around 650 hours on it. The only thing ever done to it is heads and a cam. It's getting time to refresh the engine but with 600+ hours I am wondering if I should look into replacing with a crate 40. If I get it rebuilt I'm looking into doing a stage 2 build but dont know what the longevity would be with those kind of hours. What do yall reccomend?

Re: Rebuild or Buy new
My thoughts are that's not enough hours to justify a rebuild as long as you've maintained it, changed oil, etc... I'd check the compression and do a leak down test and go from there. Might only need to lap the valves and that's it. Could be a very small cost compared to a new engine.
On the other hand, if you're just fishing for a reason to get a new 40 efi, it's a strong engine and runs good. It'll cost you around $4200 to get everything to swap it.

Re: Rebuild or Buy new
The heads on my current motor were done by a shop locally, more of a valve seat than anything. I haven't priced through a builder but would like new heads, exhaust,cm, and carb done. I'm thinking that would cost around 3.5k but may be wrong. I haven't been around a 40 personally yet so idk how much more a stage 2 would perform over the 40.

Re: Rebuild or Buy new
Yep, but I just happen to have a full kit coming up for sale, carb, heads, intake and cam done by SETX Performance that I'm about to pull off a Prodrive. The crank broke and the owner is getting a 40 to replace it. I'll be able to compare both by this weekend.

Re: Rebuild or Buy new
The heads on my ebb and flow engine were finished by a shop locally, to a greater degree a valve situate than anything. I haven't estimated through a manufacturer yet might want new heads, exhaust,cm, and carb done. I'm believing that would cost around 3.5k however might not be right. I haven't been around a 40 by and by yet so idk the amount more a phase 2 would perform over the 40.

Re: Rebuild or Buy new
Going through the same thought process now. I have an 11' with about 500hrs and Stage 2. It is a strong motor but I am about to start bringing my little boy and would like the peace of mind with reliability. Looking to directly swap the 40 and probably sell off the CDI motor.

Re: Rebuild or Buy new
I can tell you this, my 40 with exhaust and prop work runs with any stage 3 in the area. I love it. Marcus is about to do his magic to it soon too

Re: Rebuild or Buy new
But I must say this, my hull is super light and just runs for some reason, so a level 3 on my boat may run faster than my 40. It could all be my skiff, I just don’t know. In any event, if you decide to get it modded, send it to one of the guys in here, I will be using Marcus this summer, but a lot of these guys are on point and will get you set up

Re: Rebuild or Buy new
Gator tails are nice but I need the full power reverse where I run.
I ended up buying a new 40 pro drive. It runs 31mph empty and 30 with me, wife, and baby in the boat. I'm very pleased with it.

Re: Rebuild or Buy new
I wouldn’t rebuild with only 650 hours on it. Maybe after 1500. An upgrade to the 40 EFI would see you gain a ton of power and speed compared to what you have now.
