Ive got some questions regarding which gear I need to be running on my lower unit. I discovered last weekend that my housing was leaking so I pulled it all apart to put a new gasket on it and in the process I noticed my current gear was very badly worn. So now im wondering if i need to be changing the tooth count on the gear. The current gear is a 50 tooth. Im looking into purchasing a 48 tooth instead of a new 50 tooth. What are the pro's/con's of switching to a lower tooth count gear and what can I expect to get out of it performance wise if anything. I've got a mud buddy 35 hd that has had a cam, mikuni, exhaust, and heads done on it. Im running a hammer prop on it currently. Any input would be great. Ive only had the motor for about 10 months so im still pretty green to the mud motor world. Thanks

It's about the same as gears in your truck. A high gear has more speed etc. A low gear has more torque. That's the easy way to explain it.

1. What top gear is currently installed?
2. What are your goals, i.e. more load, or more speed?
3. Are you struggling with current setup?

How many rpms at what speed with a new prop with a normal load? That's gonna tell you if you need to change gear size.

I’ve never messed with the rev limiter. I always got up around 3700 rpms and backed off. Still had plenty of power left. What should I be setting my rev limiter for? And are there any good videos on how to do so? I’ve never messed with one.

You don’t set your rev limiter. It is set by your coils. The mud buddy website has a chart with all the different gear ratios on it for reference. If you max out your rpm while running, consider changing your gear ratio.

If you cant hit 4700 you don't need to drop a gear size,higher rpms is better than lugging the engine.Upper gear should be 36 or 38 most I see are 38.

The root of the issue is the rev limiter that he said the previous owner set. Until we see what his max rpms are under light or normal load, the rest doesn't matter. He's obviously not on the coils at 3700, don't even know if his engine has the cdi coils, so we've got some answers to get first.
