Post pro drive 150 merc!
A little something the local pro drive dealer is working on. Its legit, no water yet, lookin for a boat to tie it to. Opinions welcome, what would some of you be willing to pay for a rig like this?? Assuming all bugs are worked out. Working on a prop. Thanks and enjoy. Hope to update soon, happy boating.

Hope I did that right, if no copy/paste. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBw1eGZ- ... ata_player

No comments? 17 views and nothing?? Not a fan boy to any make ( i drive a mb) but this was pretty impressive to me,and it only shut off because the gas tank was on the floor standing on end (not flat) almost empty.

Pretty cool, but did it actually start and run? Didn't look like it in video.

Take the ProDrive sticker off and say that Mudbuddie invented it and the MUdbuddie owners will pay whatever you ask for it. Of course Mudbuddie owners don't need reverse.

Looks like a normal B&S engine with a 150 cover.

What kind of power head, and if it is a 2.L,2.4L then how is it cooled? I'm all about a motor with a cowling.

Hard to tell from my phone, but it looks like the stock Briggs exhaust sitting under the back of the cowl.

It will be cooled by a car radiator mounted to the transom, and its not a B&S motor. Yea its the regular PD muffler on there too.

Sounds sweet. Your gonna need a hell of a prop to NOT blow out if you get in the mud with it. looks like yall took the exhaust ports and ran it to a stock briggs muffler?

The rad. Won't be directly bolted to the transom, just in that general area. As for the exhaust- I'm not at liberty to discuss that :-)
The whole thing is just a little project thing, just see in how good it can really work . The only reason I asked how much it could sell for is I might like to buy it from the guy if it all works well and is reliable enough, imagine passing bass boats and the tail this thing would throw!!!

Doesn't sound like any Mercury starter I ever heard. And just for the record, this Mud Buddy owner would not be interested in purchasing one no matter the cost.(reverse or not) :D

How's he plan on pumping the water from the radiator to the powerhead, I assume some type of 12V powered pump? He'd be better off using keel cool instead of a radiator, that way he won't need to worry about a 12V fan for the radiator, a 12V pump and a silly looking radiator in the back of the boat. He'll still need the pump, but he'd be able to improve his reliability by deleting the fan from the equation.

Going to have to use a fan on the radiator to displace the heat like a hydraulic cooler with a temp sensor. But holding enough water to circulate and keep the temps down is going to be where the problem will arise. IMO not an engineer by any means.

Yea he has tried this before lol but it had like 4 ATV/dirtbike rads around the power head. Actually looked kinda cool, butbthe hood didnt fit obviously, and it wouldn't stay cool at idle for a long time, seems the cooling is one of the toughest hurdles to cross doing this. I still think it bad ass, he thinks with the prop he's getting machined hell be pushing 55-60mph, scary in a mud boat but still bad ass

Maybe some keel coolers in conjunction with the radiators.

Post Re: pro drive 150 merc!
I'm a little confused, the keel coolers I've seen are mounted on the outside of the hull, I would understand mounting them on the inside of the baot but then that would be just like putting a radiator on the inside . The motor will most likely be goin on 18-20' flat bottom Jon. I don't think the space a regular car rad would take up would be that big of a deal considering boat size. But like I said I dont think it would be that great of an idea to be running over 50 mph and hit a stump or flat with one of those keel coolers hanging off the side or mounted through the bottom of the hull. Could get a little hairy I bet. But then again I'm not sure how/where you are suggesting to mount it. Thanks and keep suggestions commin

I've seen those before, I just think the pd lower unit is better and it has for, and its a 150 2stroke

I haven't seen one in person but I've seen them on here and other sites. I get the whole idea I just kind of think it defeats the purpose to have a flat bottom mud rig with these things, sticking off the side or bottom of it, but then if you put them inside the boat why nit just have one big(er) radiator and be done with it, versus having a smaller radiator with two or three of the keel coolers inside the boat

If you prop/gear it right to keep speed down and still carry a load it might work ok.

If you need to speed of Outboard....well get an outboard.

YOU WILL KILL YOURSELF IF YOUR LOWER UNIT HITS A LOG, STUMP, 10 POUND BASS AT 50+ MPH.

FN Prodrive is hard enough on your arm/leg/shoulder at 25-35 MPH and you hit a stump.

Keel coolers can be made several different ways, you can cut a channel in the bottom and mount inside channel flush with the bottom, you can weld channel aluminium inside along the bottom leaving the bottom of the boat flat, and you can weld channel aluminium hanging off the bottom. The coolers can also be made of other materials.

1. & 2. The whole purpose of this project is to have the performance of an outboard with the capability of a shallow water/surface drive.

3. The motor will still kick up since its a pd motor and lower unit, its just a diff power head, the box and all controls are all still factory pd, everything is except engine.

4. It will be a cable or hydraulic steering system, and a MB is way tougher on your shoulder and arm than a pd, ** attn all fan boys **** not harder to drive, just harder on your shoulder, I've owned both and I have to let off when I want to turn the MB from left to right or vice versa, at full throttle, never a prob with the pd. As far as hitting stumps I think there about the same and anyone who is not smart enough to drive with the tiller on or against their leg well....

And having a channel kinda sounds like a bad idea going that fast. Boat needs to be flat on bottom, sounds like a big radiator is gonna be the best option so far, but ill suggest the keel coolers to the guy and see what he says
