Post GTR 35 skeg
I recently sold my mudbuddy and bought a new gtr... I had some hellacious tiller torque so i bent the back of the tail a little more. It helped some but was afraid of bending more. Everyone was like, dont be scared, bend the shit out of it. Bent it some more today and it cracked in 2 places. My last motor was mounted about 1.5" off center to help eliminate it. Do people still do that?

yes - DO NOT bend new GT kegs there cast, mount off center and try different trim pin positions

Mine has a bead welded down the trailing edge. Works well.

How old is your motor. Does it have a cone shaped LU.

The only thing you can do is grind a groove in the crack then weld it up.

Judging by that first pic you had to exert some pretty good force on it to make it do that. Did you not stop and think, "maybe I ought to pick up the phone before I tear some shit up"? I'm just going off the flattened sections of the casting. That normally takes some effort to accomplish. Also, is it not common knowledge by now that cast doesn't bend well? That being said, I think Gator-Tail should fix it if in fact this is still in their owner's manual. But it also appears you let the manual think for you. It's pretty obvious that your old lower unit was made from a completely different material. I'd be willing to be it was pretty easy to adjust...

I'd contact them and present your case, most likely they'll do something for you. However, if it were me that pulled a bone-head like that, I'd have it welded and move on about my business.

Post Re: GTR 35 skeg
Well i put a 36in pipe wrench on it and tried bending it with that 1st,then i loked at my phone and thought, "i need some more leverage." next i picked up a diesel mechanic 42in cresent wrench and wooped on it with that for at least 30min.again,i glanced at my phone, but decided against useing it bc i knew that i still needed more leverage. I found a piece of 3in threaded pipe about 48in long to put on the wrench. By then 2 of my neighbors came over to see wtf i was up to, so we all got a position on the cheater pipe and gave it repetitive pulling and jerking moves like we were playing tug-of-war. Son of a bitch still wouldn't move, but i could hear some creaking and high moaning noises from it so i knew i was getting close. My phone went off and i noticed it was a call from gator-tail again... Same ol mechanical department wanting to congratulate me on my purchase and update me on some type of new material they were useing on the lower units now, but i had no time to talk bc i was coming up with a master plan. One of my neighbors hauls rock for a living and had his dump truck at home with a full load so we hooked it up to the cheater pipe with a 75ft long chain then backed it up as close as possible so we would have a running start at it. Before cleatus nailed it i got my torch and rose bud tip out and clamped it on the skeg with some vice grips while the torch was wide open about an eighth of an inch from the metal. We proceeded into my house and all had a sandwich and some redbull while we got the metal warm. Ol cleat climbed in and dropped the hammer. We had to hit it at a down hill angle several times... Finally, the piece of shit gave and cracked in two different places... Setx longtail i swear to God if you ever reply some stupid-fuck comments to me again when im asking others for help i will find you, and i will beat the fuckn fat out of you. I will burn your gdam house down. Im in hardin co too, let's have a beer and bs yo

Just a little common sense would have been all that was needed to avoid the breakage.... On his part AND by gatortail to make sure the right manual (or the right instructions) were given with the motor. The story was sort of humorous. And I understand his frustration, I'd be pissed to if something happened to my new $7000+ boat motor. But talking about burning someone's house down and all that is just a little uncalled for. He could have just said that he wished my new boat sinks and I drown or something...

Next time you read something that says place your head in a vise and clamp down are we going to be reading about how pissed you are about medical bills?

but I guess because I dont "own a surface drive" I just don't quite get it.... Neither do you if that's the prerequisite.

Well I guess I'm the only person in the history of MMT that has ever pissed anyone off.

Feel free to look back thru my posts. I try to give good advice and help people. I probably should have phrased what I said a little differently but is this the first time this has ever been brought up? Nope. People were warned about this very thing as soon as these new lowers came out. I guess since I don't own one, I just shouldn't pay attention to anything else either. Part of what I do for a living involves failure analysis.... I was simply stating what I was looking at based on the pics that were posted.

Not to mention, according to him he was sponsored by MudBuddy as of Feb 20, and a GTR was a pile of shit, now he owns one? You fellas should go back and read some of this dude's posts. Some real damn gems in there, including him talking all sorts of shit about you Kris... So it turns out, in the name of trolling. We should all take lessons from the OP.

Drill it on each side of the crack. Grind a groove in the crack then weld it and grind smooth. You shouldn't have any trouble after that.
