Post Broke Belt, Spent Night In Basin
The trip started with me getting stuck on hard sandy bottom in a narrow cut. The water depth where I finally stopped for good was not even past my ankle, maybe 2 inches. We ended up taking the ice chests along with driftwood, logs, lilies, and mud and made a dam right behind the boat. That allowed the water to come up to enough for us to get it floating and push it off. That ordeal took about an hour and a half and was before the sun even dropped. My buddy who came up with the dam idea will be called "Beaver" from now on.
As far the other person I brought, he is now sarcastically called "Garmin." The only reason he was even invited was because of his "knowledge of the basin," and my lack thereof. Well he is full of shit and got us lost. BTW he's the one who guaranteed that the cut we got stuck in would be plenty deep enough to pass.
At about 1:30 in the morn, we were lost but just finding perfect bank and the frogging was heating up when I hit a small stump that usually wouldnt make me think twice or imagine would damage my motor. Well, this little logged caused the belt to snap and we were dead in the water. Good thing we had plenty of beer and crown. We floated, drank and waited for sunrise for morning fishermen to pass. Well, in the morning, they passed, and passed, and passed....We were refused help by fellow boaters on about 6 occasions. Finally we got someone to drag us 13 miles back to the landing.
What a trip!

Next time cut a piece of your bow rope to use as a belt. It won't get you in step but it will turn da prop allowin you to idle back in.

How were those mosquito's? August on the Basin I can only imagine they were swarming! I was stranded ONCE- signed up with Sea Tow. They will come and get you wherever you are, anytime! Not sure if they are in LA, but may be something to consider.

What I couldnt believe about the whole ordeal was how many fellow boaters refused to help us in the morning. I was about at the point I was gonna get violent if another sumnabitch said no to giving us a tow.[/quote]

The same thing happened to me. Before I had a mud motor I had a little 25 hp Merc. outboard. I burned it up one afternoon in thick hydrilla, and was dead in the water. All I had was a 6 ft paddle,( I was in a 16ft carolina skiff) and I was about 2 miles from the ramp, against the current! I was paddling my ass off, and watched boat after boat just go on by, they pretended they didn't see me trying to wave them down. One pontoon boat was fishing about 50 yards from me, and just watch me sweat my nuts off trying to paddle this damn boat back to the ramp. Finally I guy did stop, but it was amazing to me how many guys just completely blew me off.

If it was me I would stopped to help a brother out in heart beat! Glad you guys made it back safely-

This is beginning to sound like a John Quinones "What Would You Special" on ABC.

It might be a good idea for his next show.

Didn't somebody post up here one time about it being a law to help a stranded boater? Something about if you get their boat #'s and call WLF, they can get ticketed?? Don't see how that could be proven though. Just say, "It wasn't me"

I agree it is a pain in the ass to pull someone back in if you are on your way out, but how do you feel when it's your turn?? Common Courtesy to help someone out, you never know when it will be you!!

That is F-ed up.. I've been towed in, and have towed people in my fair share of times. Leaving someone is just straight up wrong...

i get how it could suck to have to change your fishing plans to pull someone. But hell, that's just what you gotta do sometimes.
As far as the law goes, i believe it's true that you are required to give aid to a boater in distress. But, any a-hole who aint gonna help a brotha out, aint gonna care about no law.
