 Newbie Looking For Some Advise
Hey fellas. I've never owned a mud boat/motor. I'm in the market for one now and am looking at a 2012 Excel swv4 1751. The hull is loaded with LED interior lighting. All storage compartments have led lights. 3 pedestal seat mounts. Comes equipped with a built in 3500lb winch. After market LED headlights. Motor is 36hp pro drive with 60hrs.
I hunt the shallow grass flats of the Mobile delta down here in south Alabama if that makes any difference.

Not bad. I would sell that rig here new for around 20k. bearing in mind that price includes rigging, SC sales tax, and an all aluminum trailer.

Re: Newbie Looking For Some Advise
Ask the seller if he shimmed the motor mount to compensate for the incorrect transom angle for the prodrive.. not a big deal, that is just something your going to want to do. CHECK FOR HOOKS!! they make excel out of both .100 and .125, and the .100's will fold relatively easy (really a combination of hull thickness, and chicken shit bracing) . But If everything checks out and you like it, then your gonna have a much nicer first rig than most folks out there.

An average price, good motor, need to get some more info on the boat... I live in mobile too, if you have any questions maybe I can help you out.

Re: Newbie Looking For Some Advise
Thanks for the advise fellas. Gonna pass this one up. I did look at a 2012 1851 excel today after work. 35 mud buddy. The rig has never seen the water. .125 alum. with hunt deck. Dealer asking $15900. Just wondering, is it the mod-v that makes these boats not preform well? I know thats a pretty heavy boat for a stock 35 mud buddy.

Re: Newbie Looking For Some Advise
Been looking at the go devil website. The ideal boat for me would be the 1648. Go devil says they put the 27 hp sd on that hull. I would rather have the 35 sd. Is there that much difference in the wieght of the motors? Why not the 35?

Re: Newbie Looking For Some Advise
Look into getting a custom boat and then buy a prodrive or gator tail and be done. You will get way more for your money by doing this.

Re: Newbie Looking For Some Advise
I have a Gator Trax and love it but its the only mud boat I have ever been in. I no fellows who own other mud boats that road in it prefer the way it turns. I have a short video of it turning on you tube. Just type in Gator Trax in a hard turn. Also to help decide what you need there are some videos on you tube under Gator Trax Boats that explain how to decide on what size boat will fit your needs. It's mainly depends on the load you carry. All in all Gator Tail, prodrive, go-devil and gator Trax all make quality boats. Just comes down to personal preferances and price. If you get a chance see if drive some different boats. The only reason I have the Gator Trax is because I found a great deal on a used one that was built exactly like I had drawn on a piece of paper of what I wanted. If it had been Gator Tail or Pro drive I still would have bought it. One thing to consider though is service after the sale. You don't want to have to drive all day to go get repairs done. I'd by a quality boat as close to home as possible. That's just me though. Luckily in Louisiana I'm close to all of them.

Re: Newbie Looking For Some Advise
Yea my cousin has a gator trax and we have had some great hunts out of it. Its 1854 and is a little big for what I want. Think I am going to head over to Batton Rouge sat. and see what I can find. Talked to godevil today and they said they could fix me up. Going for 1648 with the 27 sd. Been looking around on here. Can't find any reviews on that rig. Anyone know what speeds it should get?

Re: Newbie Looking For Some Advise
Probably around 23-26 empty.. Low 20's to High teens loaded. I've only Ridden in a 1644 gd hull and it had a 23 surface drive that had a cam and exhaust and top end the speeds were Right around 24 with an empty boat + 2 passengers. Loaded to bowfish (3 guys lights 3 battery's Full 65 quart yeti) we were runnin 15 in deep water and only Around 16-17 in 2' of water or less

Re: Newbie Looking For Some Advise
Well that was my plan ( to get the 35 ) but gd will not put it on the 1648. Guess I could buy them separate and put the motor on myself.

Re: Newbie Looking For Some Advise
Get the 18x48 you will be much happier with a longer boat than a wider one.

Re: Newbie Looking For Some Advise
Many will say the 1848 is the most versatile overall size. I sold my 1644 (GD) and will be getting an 1848 with an open layout. I plan to bowfish, catfish, and hunt with this rig. After having the go devil for 3 years I landed on this size as best for me and the best compromise for load carrying vs speed.

Re: Newbie Looking For Some Advise
I ran a 1848 last season and loved it. Hauled a good load and ran fairly shallow. I would say go as long as you can possibly go. Personally I don't want a wide boat. But that's my opinion.
