Post winching the boat on the trailer
So what is the trick to setting the winch up perfectly so the boat will pull on the trailer easier. Mine in a SOB to pull up. My winch is too low im sure that is a problem but would like to hear your opinions.

Put some poly on them boards - or - frog spit on the boat bottom
and it will slid on easy then.... Otherwise your winch should be 1 inch
higher than the hookup on the boat to pull on smoothly....

With my rig I have to dunk my lights to launch the boat... When putting back on trailer I have my buddy or I just back so the lights are just above the water... I give a little throttle and just a little goose at the end once it hits the bunk boards. You never want to be able to float your boat right onto trailer make sure you can ramp up onto it this way you'll always be centered.

good info guys. I do drive it on on but that last 2-4" are a big pain in the ass. I am going to raise the winch and see if that helps. unfortunetly we often put in on roadside ditches and other awkward spots so the winch is a neccesity

If your winch is to low you are pulling down and not forward so your fighting it.

Try making the winch pull straight. If that does not help, get a bigger winch.

I drive up but always have a few inches to winch. I pull the boat onto flat ground first. I would rather not pull the boat uphill.

If you can, get the wench to crank the winch. Try to get the wench to wash the boat too.

Hey Short on Cache----Are you referring to the way the hand crank will bump the pointed bow on our Phowler hulls when the front is pulled up to the roller but the back of the boat is still floating above the submerged trailer? If so, just clip the winch strap on to the bow eyelet and give a few cranks until it gets to that point where you will smash your fingers and leave it---pull the boat and trailer out of the water onto level ground and then with your left arm slightly lift the bow of the boat and finish cranking the boat all the way to the roller being careful not to smash your knuckles. That's the way I do my 1848 with pointed bow.

Post Re: winching the boat on the trailer
I have moved the winch back away from the front roller to help the issue of the winch handle hitting the bow now I think I just need to raise it up some. Im sure that this will help. I do pull it out of the water to winch the last little bit on level ground but any way I do it it is a pain. I will let you guys know how raising it helps. Unfortunetly I will have to cut the vertical shaft on the winch bracket and weld in a peice to raise it. Ive seen some that are adjustable but mine is not.

Before you cut and weld, can you use the roller to change the angle of pull? (Put the strap over the roller) Might tell you if you are on the right track before major surgery.

Do you have wire, rope or strap for your winch?

If wire, then you could mount you a steel roller or pulley on a pipe or something to lift the wire higher and still allow the winch to be mounted low.

It would pull up alot easier if your boat was not a barge. LOL  Let me know you to need to weld something.
