Post Frog Spit fill hooks? Rig has slowed down, ideas?
Alright guys, I feel like I have lost some speed in my mud rig. Got everything dialed in, and checked everything that I could come up with. So, in your opinion is Frog Spit worth the money? I am not really buying it so the boat can slide off the trailer easier or slide over oyster bars. I don't usually run this type of terrain. I am usually in stumps, sand, or mud flats. More stumps than anything. I am considering buying a gallon and applying it. What do you think?

For the Gator Tail guys, just curious if a loose belt may slow you down? I have not checked the tightness of my belt but it does do a fair amount of rattling in the belt box. So much that my plastic box cracked. I only have 200 hours on the rig though. Wouldn't think the belt would already need to be replaced or have shims added. They should last longer than that, right?

Thanks for the help.

No, a loose belt won't slow you down. Your problems lie elsewhere. You should check your belt for proper tightness though when you get the chance.

If you have a hook and/or hooks in the hull bottom, that WILL slow you down, big time. This is more than likely your problem.

What rpm's are you turning in the water? Furthermore, what in the hell or you jumping to put hooks in your bottom? Your boat is fairly new!

All it takes is a couple small dents/hooks to create drag and slow you down. You could also look into the teflon option.

If your belt is loose just shim it up. No need to replace it if it's still good. Those belts are really strong and last a long time.

I Where can I find info about this Teflon? I don't really like the idea of having to re-apply the Frog Spit after each season. Would like something to just put on, not have to worry about it, and something that doesn't slow me down too bad.

Craig, just curious what kind of rig do you run? How thick bottom?

Thanks

Maybe yer boat is just a piece of CRAP.....

Per the manufacturer........Frog spit is not intended to FILL hooks.

SteelFlex is what Ive heard is used to fill hooks. You can come over to the CASA and help apply the FS to my new shiny boat in about 2 weeks

Fasco has a filler that you can use before applying the steelflex.

Yeah, the poly would hurt your speed because of the weight. It may put you right where you are now since you've lost a few miles an hour from the hooks. It would be put on to keep the hull from getting any worse, or possibly tearing it. It seems to be damn near indestructible. Look at some of the stuff they do with those airboats.

STEELFLEX SUPER SLICK EPOXY COATING #9X-2000, not sure about the filler. Give them a call and they can hook you up.

Thanks.

Now the next question I have is, do you have to apply it up the sides of the boat too or just bottom to get it to have less drag?

dont mean to steal your thread but ive been wondering the same thing. i dont have a mudboat but runnin a 17X48 alweld. at the begginin of the season i was runnin 29.5 with 2 people and no load. i gps it the other day with same load and was runnin 27.7. i know i have some hooks in the bottom of my boat and was wonderin if SF/FS would fix my problem and regain my speed????

If you are running 25 with a fairly flat bottom (per your above post) you will not pick up any noticeable speed with stelflex. Maybe a mph or 2, but if you pick up 2 I would be surprised with your above synopsis.

I've done the steelflex thing with my last hull, if worked great on a nasty hook. I beat it as flat as I could then filled in. Mine was toward the transom, and was causing me to plow, so it worked.

I think you will be disappointed with the outcome if you buy it. MAybe your hull configuration is the problem.

[quote="HuntingRDR"]Thanks.

What its supposed to be used for is sliding over the veggies. If that is what you are using it for, then running it on up the sides would be a good idea. Just mark where the boat sits in the water and run it up at least that high, maybe an inch or two higher to compensate for a load.

Just also be aware that its not poly. If your runnin stumps enough to make hooks in the aluminum, your gonna chip off either one of these products. They are not really made to run stumps. Mud, sand, and veggies. Now I'm lookin to do the same thing you are, but haven't found enough info on how well it holds up against stumps to buy it yet. Hopefully this thread will get both of us the info we want.

I believe the misconception of either the SF or FS being a miracle cure for hooks to the hulls and conditions you run is being blown out of proportion. I know some folks have reported gaining lost speed back and others getting close to it. A severly hooked hull would probably gain the most obvious performance back with the hooks filled in. But neither can make up for a weak hull or future damage that hull will take from running the same areas again. But IMO, at 100.00 and a couple days of downtime applying the stuff is no bing deal to me. Whats you time worth? I plan to give it a try. My hull is not beat to hell but I have a few hooks and just hoping that the slickness will help in the veggies some.

nothing thiner than 3/16 teflon will help you keep you bottom from being hooked.

You have a Generation 1 boat and the bottoms do not last. If you pound out the hooks and put anything on them it will come back. Even UHMW will not keep the hooks from comign back when you are runnign stumps and jumping beaver jams. best I can tell ya is just live with it. Its going to get alot worse before it gets better.

If you take it to GT they will put soem good crap on it, but it is ment to make your bottom last not gain speed.

Let us know what you come up with.
